Researcher's Summary:

In an industry where behavior is dictated by whims and fancies, timing is vital to hook a lead or make a sale. Since 1995, Constant Contact has remained an, ahem, constant in the fast-paced world of digital marketing, thanks to its user-friendly interface, drag-and-drop email builder and templates. I couldn’t help but wonder if that was enough today, with new software popping up like new Fast and Furious movies.

After putting in some basic information, the dashboard sets you up with the first steps you need to take. Like a handy onboarding package when you join a new company, it sure beats twiddling your thumbs or (God forbid) working on the completely wrong task. I started off by uploading an Excel file of our SME database and matching the fields.

Constant Contact pre-matched the fields quite well, and it was just as easy to add custom fields from a drop-down menu. However, I thought it could benefit from more website fields instead of just the date and text field options provided. Next, I added tags to streamline segmentation and modified some of the contacts with import errors instead of manually entering broken contacts. The filters use the search bar, which is handy.

The second item on Constant Contact’s checklist was email creation. I loved the flexibility to choose from 3 different template options: build from scratch, convert from a pdf or create using HTML.

Even though I am by no means a coder, I was able to create a basic email template with personalization (like the recipient’s first name), add the body and insert an image. It was easy to send out if you’ve already created a specific contact list (however, I’d say creating individual lists may be a bit more basic than other solutions). Bonus, the email showed up in my Promotions tab instead of spam!

I was a fan of the immediate prompt to create a social post once I sent the email, and how it directs you to socials creation. It also links with Canva, pulls stock images and allows you to upload your own graphics, so you can run your social media in-house.

A big plus for me was that it showed previews of different social media sites. You can see if something is cropped a bit off or if the wording looks funny. The AI caption generator is a game changer. You can select the tone and put in a basic prompt, and voila! It pulls out three caption options (relevant hashtags included — you’re welcome).

The AI-powered campaign builder was another feature I wanted to tinker around with. Full disclosure, I already created an email and social media post before I hopped on to the multi-channel campaign builder.

After putting in a few prompts about our company and the SME insights campaign I wanted to run, the campaign generator went to work. I was fairly impressed by the six-step campaign. It had an email campaign, a webinar with SMS reminders and a LinkedIn series. Although it definitely still needed plenty of tweaking, it offered a great jumping-off point, since you could go into each step and edit the assets to meet your brand and message.

The last time-saving feature on the agenda was automations. Constant Contact has a few recommended templates plus an exciting choose your own adventure style option. Obviously, I chose the latter option.

I picked a basic birthday email automation triggered two days before the contact’s birthday with a special offer. I loved creating an email in the automation with templates you can modify with a built-in editor. Alas and alack, I was unable to test it out without shelling out for an upgrade. Landing pages, sign-up forms and advanced reporting also required an upgrade. Although I could create and edit the first two, I couldn’t publish them.

I was delighted to see that the internet and I were on the same page about the easy-to-use interface, drag-and-drop editor, built-in templates and asset library. Alternatively, I could see where users felt a little unsure-footed with steep pricing past 10,000 contacts and a tricky unsubscribe policy. Another experience popping up on Reddit is glitches with the editor resulting in unsaved changes; however, I didn’t see it myself during my test period.

Overall, Constant Contact still got that dog in them if you’re looking for a flexible email builder, user-friendly interface, up-to-date templates and generative AI content, and don’t mind locking in to a long-term plan.

Key Features

  • Drag-and-Drop Editor: Facilitates customizing an email template and designing professional, mobile-responsive emails for every device.

  • Surveys and Polls: Facilitates creating custom surveys and polls, and enables viewing individual results from respondents or tracking general data trends from social media or an email survey.
  • Campaign Report: View email metrics such as sends, opens, clicks and more. Compare campaigns to determine which received the most opens or clicks.
  • Integrations: Integrates with apps such as Salesforce, Outlook, Mindbody, Shopify, Facebook and more.
  • A/B Testing: Run an A/B test on two versions of subject lines to maximize email open rates.
  • Contact Segmentation and Targeted Marketing: Create customized segments based on a contact’s engagement with email campaigns, location and company details, and already-existing lists. Send targeted marketing emails with relevant messages.
  • Contact Management: Upload contacts from Excel, Outlook, Salesforce and more.
  • Email Scheduling: Send emails instantly or schedule them to be sent at a future time. Suggests the best time to send emails based on the industry’s open rate.
  • Landing Pages: Two types are available:
    • Lead Generation: Collects visitor information and helps set up automated email series to stay connected to new leads.
    • Shoppable: Enables selling products and supports tracking results such as gross revenue, page visitors, conversion rates and more.

Limitations

These limitations, based on user feedback, are accurate at the time of this review:

  • The design for email marketing appears differently on different web browsers.
  • Templates can sometimes have glitches, including errors that cause text spacing or font styles to change.
