**Bottom line:** Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business both live inside the Microsoft ecosystem, but Teams is the better pick for most buyers today. Skype for Business still works for smaller setups with basic chat and call needs, especially where budget is tight.

Teams is built for active collaboration. You get chat, video meetings up to 250 people, file co-authoring through SharePoint and OneDrive, and live events for webinars. It fits enterprises, small and mid-sized businesses, freelancers and schools. Skype for Business leans toward straightforward messaging, voice and video calls, with presence info and Outlook scheduling baked in.

On price, Microsoft Teams starts at $4 per user per month and Skype for Business starts at $2 per user per month. Skype for Business costs less at the entry tier, but Teams gives you a wider feature set for the extra spend.

Pick Skype for Business if you want a simple, lower-cost tool for internal chat and meetings and you're already using Office 365\. It also fits regulated work in finance, healthcare or education where security and federation matter. Just know it lacks integrated dial-in audio conferencing.

Pick Microsoft Teams if you need screen recording, custom backgrounds, interactive webinars and tighter file collaboration. Users like its easy interface, though notifications can be inconsistent and performance sometimes lags.
