Pros

What we like about SQLite and MariaDB:

* Zero configuration and serverless architecture make deployment dead simple
* Single-file database format makes it incredibly portable across systems
* Public domain license allows unrestricted use, including in commercial software
* Compact library under 1 MB fits embedded apps and IoT devices easily

* MySQL compatibility makes migration straightforward for existing MySQL apps
* Galera Cluster gives synchronous multi-master replication for high availability
* Wide pick of storage engines like Aria, InnoDB, and MyRocks fits different workloads
* Open-source and free, with no licensing fees and a flexible plugin architecture

Cons

What we dislike about SQLite and MariaDB:

* Single-file model causes performance bottlenecks as the database grows large
* Concurrent users can hit conflicts when multiple writes happen at once
* Lacks advanced features like stored procedures or user-defined functions
* No robust admin interface for managing multi-user environments

* Setup and configuration can get tricky, especially for clustered deployments
* Some versions hit compatibility snags with certain MySQL tools or libraries
* Security and admin processes feel less friendly to newcomers
* Smaller ecosystem of enterprise-grade analytics tooling than commercial DBs

### Our Review

**Bottom line:** Pick SQLite if you need an embedded, zero-admin database for mobile apps, desktop tools, or local data storage. Pick MariaDB if you need a full-featured relational database for web apps, multi-user systems, or anything beyond a single-process workload.

SQLite pricing starts at $6,000 as a one-time fee. MariaDB is free and open-source, starting at $0\. The pricing models work very differently, so map each against your deployment plan before comparing.

SQLite fits you well when you need local data storage, rapid prototyping, or a database baked right into your app. It's the go-to for mobile, desktop, IoT, and unit testing because it doesn't need a server process.

MariaDB makes more sense for web apps, e-commerce, or anything with multiple concurrent users. Its Galera Cluster, ColumnStore engine, and MySQL compatibility cover production-grade workloads SQLite simply can't reach.

If your scope stays embedded or single-process, SQLite is the right tool. If you need real concurrency, replication, and a path to scale, MariaDB is the stronger choice, just plan for more setup work.
