Pros

What we like about SQL Server and SQLite:

* Handles large, complex workloads with strong stability and minimal downtime
* Integrates tightly with Azure, Power BI, and other Microsoft tools
* Always On Availability Groups deliver enterprise-grade failover and disaster recovery
* Multi-layered security including encryption, RBAC, and active threat detection

* File-based design eliminates network latency for very fast reads
* Whole database lives in a single file, making it portable across systems
* Public domain license allows free use in any commercial app
* Library is under 1 MB, fitting cleanly into mobile and embedded apps

Cons

What we dislike about SQL Server and SQLite:

* Licensing can get expensive for large deployments and Enterprise edition users
* Setup and admin require specialized skills, especially in larger environments
* Limited cross-platform support since it's primarily designed for Windows
* Switching off SQL Server is hard given proprietary T-SQL and ecosystem ties

* Single-file architecture limits scalability for large, high-traffic applications
* Concurrency is limited, with bottlenecks when many processes write at once
* Lacks stored procedures and user-defined functions found in larger systems
* No built-in admin interface, which makes multi-user setups harder to run

### Our Review

**Bottom line:** SQL Server and SQLite live at opposite ends of the database spectrum. Pick SQL Server when you're running enterprise apps on Microsoft infrastructure with serious data volume. Pick SQLite when you need a tiny, embeddable database for a mobile app, desktop tool, or single-user project.

SQL Server is built for scale. It runs reliably under heavy workloads, integrates with Azure, Power BI, SSRS, and .NET, and supports In-Memory OLTP, columnstore indexes, and Always Encrypted. Users praise its stability for mission-critical apps but flag the steep licensing costs.

SQLite plays a different role entirely. It runs as a library inside your app, with the whole database living in one file. There's no server, no setup, and no DBA work. That makes it the go-to for mobile apps, IoT devices, and tools that ship a database with them.

On pricing, SQL Server starts at $1,418 annually for paid tiers, while SQLite lists support starting at $6,000 one-time, though the core library is free under a public domain license. The two products solve such different problems that direct cost comparison rarely matters.

If you need enterprise reliability, deep Microsoft integration, or large-scale analytics, SQL Server is the obvious pick. If you want zero configuration, a small footprint, and read-heavy local data, SQLite is the better fit. Some teams use both, with SQLite on the client and SQL Server on the server.
