* Reporting is complex and often needs IT support or advanced technical skills to use well

**Bottom line:** Microsoft Project is the better fit if your team already lives in the Microsoft ecosystem and needs flexible scheduling across waterfall, agile and hybrid projects. Planview Daptiv makes more sense if you're running a project management office and need strong portfolio oversight, strategic alignment and resource forecasting across a large number of projects.

Microsoft Project handles scheduling in depth. You get Gantt charts, task dependencies, resource leveling, sprint planning and Kanban layouts — all in one tool. It connects natively with Word, Excel, Teams and SharePoint, so if your team already uses those tools, the workflow feels natural. Daptiv takes a different angle. Its strength is portfolio management: you can see all projects at once, align them to strategic goals, prioritize based on resource availability and track outcomes across the portfolio.

On pricing, Microsoft Project starts at $10 per user per month. Daptiv starts at $29 per month. Microsoft Project's per-user model scales with headcount, while Daptiv's monthly pricing may work differently depending on how your contract is structured.

Configurability is a real differentiator for Daptiv. Users can tailor workflows, dashboards and methodologies to match how their teams actually work. Microsoft Project is less flexible on that front — customization exists but isn't straightforward, and the platform works best when you work within its structure rather than around it.

Both tools have usability trade-offs. Microsoft Project has a steep learning curve, and its collaboration features don't hold up well for teams that need communication built into the project tool. Daptiv's interface can feel overwhelming for new users, and it doesn't offer a mobile experience, which limits access for teams working on the go.

If you need a scheduling-first tool that plugs into Microsoft's suite, Project is the stronger choice. If you're managing a portfolio of projects and need strategic alignment and resource planning at scale, Daptiv is worth the added complexity.
