AI studio drafts workflows, summarizes tasks, and helps you create custom charts inside the platform - Multiple project views like list, board, timeline, calendar, and Gantt give every team member a format they like - Guest accounts with admin, editor, commentator, or viewer permissions keep clients and suppliers in the loop - Custom rules, automations, and templates let you build workflows without touching any code - Open-source model with a self-hosted option appeals to security-conscious users and those with compliance needs - Flexible workflows, issue tracking, and project structures adapt to both agile and waterfall methodologies - Built-in time tracking, budgeting, and cost management tools handle billing and financial oversight natively - Integrated wiki and document management keep project knowledge and files in one shared space Cons What we dislike about Asana and OpenProject: - Users say paid plans get pricey for smaller shops, making it hard to outgrow the limited free tier - Setup can feel overwhelming, and users often need extra time and help center visits to get rolling - Time tracking isn't built in, so users add third-party tools like Harvest to log hours - Offline work is a non-starter — users can't pull up task lists or update statuses without a connection - Users find the interface buggy and tough to navigate, especially when they're just getting started - Some users hit walls with customization options when trying to match the platform to specific needs - Resource tracking and allocation features feel cumbersome and inefficient, according to user reviews - The learning curve is steep, so smaller teams without technical depth may feel overwhelmed quickly ### Our Review **Bottom line:** Asana and OpenProject solve project management from opposite directions. Pick Asana if you want a polished, AI-assisted tool that works out of the box. Pick OpenProject if you want open-source flexibility, self-hosting, and a lower entry price. Asana fits you best if your team values a clean interface and quick wins. You get list, board, timeline, calendar, and Gantt views, plus AI that drafts workflows and summarizes tasks. Users praise the customization and overall functionality but flag a learning curve when you first dig in. OpenProject leans technical. It supports agile and waterfall, includes built-in time tracking, budgeting, and an integrated wiki, and lets you self-host if data sovereignty matters. Users say it's powerful but call the interface clunky and the customization options tighter than they'd like once you push past the basics. Pricing tilts toward OpenProject. Asana starts at $10.99 per user per month with a free plan for small groups, and paid tiers jump to $13.49 and $30.49 per user per month for Starter and Advanced. OpenProject starts at $7.25 per user per month and offers a free self-hosted community edition that Asana can't match. If your team is non-technical and wants AI help, automations, and guest access for clients, Asana earns the spend. If you have IT muscle, need on-prem hosting, or want agile and waterfall in one open-source package, OpenProject is the smarter pick — just plan for the setup time. ### Analyst Rating Summary Overall Scores Based on the research and analysis by SelectHub's team of research analysts, Asana has an analyst rating of 85.
