 What we dislike about Asana and Microsoft Planner:

* Users say setup is overwhelming and often needs training plus multiple help center visits.
* AI, advanced views, resource management and multiple assignees sit behind pricier plans.
* Users found the desktop app lags occasionally and offline work isn't supported.
* Time tracking is missing, so users add a third-party tool like Harvest.

* Lacks Gantt charts and milestone tracking, which limits use on complex projects.
* No dedicated desktop app, so you rely on the browser or mobile experience.
* Requires a Microsoft 365 subscription, which shuts out teams outside that ecosystem.
* Third-party integrations are limited compared to competitors like Asana.

**Bottom line:** Asana and Microsoft Planner solve different problems. Pick Asana when you need a full project management platform with multiple views, AI and custom workflows. Pick Microsoft Planner when your work already lives in Microsoft 365 and you mostly need simple task boards.

Asana fits you if your projects span more than basic to-do tracking. You get list, timeline, calendar, Kanban and Gantt views, plus task dependencies, portfolios and a workload view for resource planning. The AI studio helps draft workflows, summarize tasks and create custom charts, which is useful when staring at a blank project is the hard part.

Microsoft Planner fits you if you're already on Microsoft 365 and want task management that doesn't add another bill. It plugs into Teams, Outlook, OneNote and SharePoint, and Power Automate handles the repetitive steps. The tradeoff is depth. There's no Gantt chart, no milestone tracking and third-party integrations are thin compared to Asana.

On pricing, Asana starts at $10.99 per user per month with a free plan for personal use. Microsoft Planner starts at $5 per user per month and ships with most Microsoft 365 business subscriptions, so many of you already have it.

Watch the setup curve on Asana. Users say it takes training and a few trips to the help center to pick the right templates. Also note that AI, advanced views, resource management and multiple assignees sit on higher-tier plans, so the entry price isn't the full picture if you need those.

If you run complex projects with dependencies, guest collaborators and AI-assisted planning, Asana is worth the climb. If your team's needs stop at assigning tasks, hitting due dates and chatting in Teams, Planner gets you there without leaving the Microsoft stack.
