**Bottom line:** Microsoft Project is a strong fit if your team is already in the Microsoft ecosystem and needs solid scheduling and task management. Planview is built for larger enterprises that need to connect strategy, portfolios and agile delivery in one place.

Microsoft Project handles the core project management essentials well. It supports Gantt charts, Kanban boards, sprints and hybrid methods, so you're not locked into one approach. Its tight integration with Teams, SharePoint, Excel and other Microsoft 365 tools means less switching between apps if that's your stack. Users find the scheduling tools practical and the support responsive. That said, some advanced features take time to learn, and collaboration capabilities don't match what purpose-built tools offer.

Planview operates at a different level. It's designed for managing not just individual projects but entire portfolios, tying together strategic planning, financial management and agile delivery. If you need to align project work with business objectives, track portfolio performance and manage resources across large teams, Planview gives you more to work with than Microsoft Project does.

On price, Microsoft Project starts at $10 per user per month and Planview starts at $19 per user per month. Both are per user, per month, so Microsoft Project is the more budget-friendly option — though Planview's enterprise features justify the gap for the right use case.

Both tools have a steep learning curve. Microsoft Project is relatively familiar if your team already uses Microsoft software, but users still flag that advanced features take real effort to master. Planview's interface draws more complaints about complexity and navigation, and performance can slow down with large datasets.

If you need strategic portfolio management, agile at scale or lean delivery workflows, Planview is the better fit. If you want straightforward project scheduling that plays well with Microsoft 365, Project is the more natural choice — especially if budget is a factor.
