 Even though Paycom sits at a strong number six on our best payroll software list, I wanted to get more familiar with how it worked by diving into some webinars and YouTube videos. Our analysts gave it a perfect 100 for security and compliance, expense management, dashboards, and reporting — let’s take a look at what else I turned up.Paycom offers a variety of features designed to streamline payroll and HR processes for both employees and employers.One such capability is its ability to detect errors, such as missed or duplicate time punches. Employees can correct these issues directly through the app, providing a simple and efficient way to address discrepancies.Staying on top of payroll would be a breeze if you could see into the future, and while Paycom isn’t a crystal ball, it does help ease last-minute, unexpected changes with 24/7 access to payroll information. I like being able to manage my finances and time whenever needed.The app’s “My Pay” section, located at the top, gives employees easy access to pending tasks, such as unsubmitted expenses, pending benefits enrollment and time card approvals. Paycom’s Beti is another standout feature. It guides users through the process of finding and correcting payroll information before payroll is submitted, making payroll entries more accurate and empowering employees to manage their own payroll data.On-the-go users will find Paycom’s mobile app particularly convenient. It consolidates a wide range of HR functions in one place, including time management, time-off requests, payroll, expenses, documents, onboarding checklists, benefits, performance reviews, personnel forms, learning resources and company information.The app also lets you sign documents (a great time-saver). I also think it's nice to have performance reviews you can fill out on your phone.For new hires, Paycom offers pre-enrollment forms and allows them to track their onboarding progress, including setting up their pay information. The Paycom Learning section is clean and simple, showing users their assigned courses, such as Paycom University, while also allowing them to search for other topics like cybersecurity.In terms of expense management, Paycom makes it easy to scan or upload receipts, add brief descriptions (such as “office supplies”), confirm the date and time, and submit the expense, all within the app.For benefits administration, Paycom provides transparent pricing for plans, which simplifies the decision-making process during open enrollment. The organized and concise layout helps employees compare options more easily, alleviating the stress often associated with benefits enrollment.The platform also offers automated features that filter timesheets, expense requests and other submissions directly into payroll. This proactive approach helps prevent errors and allows employees to make corrections before payroll is processed, reducing the need for intervention from payroll administrators.From what I saw, I felt like the platform was intuitive, with helpful features like error detection and mobile PTO requests to make payroll and HR more flexible. I like their concept of giving employees more autonomy over payroll info.So, what do users think of Paycom?Paycom is highly praised for its user-friendly interface and seamless integration of HR, payroll, and compliance functions like ACA, FMLA, COBRA, and training, allowing users to consolidate multiple programs.The employee self-service features, including mobile clocking in/out and easy access to pay and time off information, are also well-received. Its customizability enables businesses to tailor the platform to their unique needs, and customer support is noted as mostly being responsive and helpful.However, common downsides include a confusing reporting system, setup issues that cause initial confusion and a desire for more customization options to handle complex needs. For most growing teams, it covers the essentials, saves time, and keeps people operations clean and centralized.For example, ASG, a software aggregator with over 60 acquisitions, cut onboarding time by 50% and saved millions by centralizing audits, payroll and compliance with Paylocity.I evaluated Paylocity on our selection platform by creating two separate scorecards, one for SMBs and one for large enterprises. Our platform lets you choose the organization size and your industry, and compare up to five software tools simultaneously.Paylocity scored a perfect 100 on our software selection platform for tax management, time tracking, shift scheduling, expense reimbursements and compensation management. Benefits management is close behind at 91, and the platform even does a great job of providing employee engagement (100) features, which aren’t technically core HR, but still a nice addition.That said, onboarding (75) and document management (83) are weak spots for SMBs and growing businesses. You can’t set retention policies, which might be intentional — it avoids risky auto-deletes or indefinite storage beyond the mandated period, but it limits control as a result.For enterprises, the document management score drops to 71 because the platform lacks certification management.And while Paylocity can technically scale, the gaps get more obvious the bigger your organization gets. Enterprises lose out on global expense tracking (80), conditions logic in advanced reporting (91) and more configurable onboarding workflows (79).Features like recognition and rewards (46) and position management (50) also fall short — gift cards are the only reward format, and you can’t set frequency or eligibility rules, which limits program depth.Still, for companies under 1,000 employees — especially those without a big in-house HR tech team — Paylocity hits a sweet spot. Small organizations see a modest drop in employee profile and onboarding management (85) and a wider gap in engagement (75). At 70, Oracle still trails category leaders like Dayforce (which hits 90), making it a tougher sell for large organizations betting heavily on predictive planning and automation. However, it might not be a deal breaker if you have a small setup.Overall, Oracle HCM is well-regarded by users for its user-friendly interface, effective integration of HR functions, and strong customer support. However, users say initial setup can be challenging, requiring a learning curve for new users. Feedback from users highlights areas such as referral tracking, interview feedback workflows and job offer processes that lack customization options. Additionally, some users have noted limitations in the reporting functionality, suggesting room for improvement in data analysis capabilities.The bottom line? Oracle HCM plays best at an enterprise scale, especially if you’re looking to unify employee data and structure engagement. Small organizations may get smoother outcomes in process-specific areas like leave tracking and performance reviews, but Oracle is a safer bet for large companies, especially those with legacy Oracle systems or a broader Fusion Cloud footprint.

And for anything it doesn’t have built-in, there’s a good workaround or add-on.True to its reputation, I found the platform easily navigable and pretty self-explanatory during my trial run. I could request time off, track accruals, create job descriptions and start onboarding/offboarding tasks intuitively — no need to look up product documentation or tutorials.Readymade reports make life easier, and flexible filtering options are available to view data by department, location and pay range. Beyond that, a custom report builder enables more tailored insights.While payroll management isn’t built-in, BambooHR offers a structured tiered approval system that enables payroll admins to conduct quick reviews before final approvals. For global teams, payroll visibility in local currency is a plus, although core payroll processing is designed around U.S. regulations which means it might not be directly transferrable to other countries.On that note, some user reviews voiced concerns about the platform being unsuitable for non-U.S. companies, but BambooHR’s customer testimonials tell a different story — I found many non-U.S.-based success stories. Here’s just one:BambooHR helped Civtec, based on Hamilton, New Zealand, manage its growing workforce by centralizing the entire employee lifecycle — from hiring to offboarding — into a single platform.The convenience of the mobile app’s document access and self-service leave logging allowed their payroll department to shift focus from routine tasks to more pressing issues. Transitioning from paper to digital time-off records addressed legal concerns and improved recordkeeping. Plus, company-wide announcements ensured consistent messaging across four branches and 300+ employees.For another one of my use cases, I checked out benefits: the benefits administration module integrates with HRIS and payroll to assign health insurance benefits to employees. I ran into no issues testing it.As an administrator, I could enroll employees for benefits or waive them as required. While employees can enroll themselves, side-by-side comparisons between benefit options aren't available yet — an addition that I hope comes soon, since it would further enhance decision-making.Time tracking is simple yet effective. I could create new requests and clock in and out from the home page, no extra clicking required. Automatic overtime calculations sync directly with payroll, but the system doesn’t issue overtime alerts. Biometric sensing isn’t available, but the platform ensures compliance and accurate payroll processing.BambooHR excels in core HR functionalities, which makes it a great option for SMBs. However, expanding its payroll and benefits coverage out of the box could make it an even more attractive all-in-one solution.
