## What Is Moodle?

**Industry Specialties:** Serves all industries

Moodle LMS is a customizable, open-source training solution for corporate organizations, K-12 schools and higher educational institutions. From interactive lessons for K-12 to complex courses at large campuses, it lets you create tailored learning experiences to suit your students’ unique needs.

Some users are skeptical about open-source software, anticipating vulnerabilities or worrying it’s too technical for them to grasp. But open-source is a lot more common than you might think, with companies from Google to Amazon and Meta all using it. Same with some very recognizable software programs, like Wordpress and Mozilla Firefox.

According to our JumpStart Platform, Moodle supports 83% of the LMS features businesses need. In addition to learner analytics, Moodle has calendars, dashboards, text editing, SCORM compatibility, learning paths, user management and course creation, the last one via an H5P integration.

Moodle ranked first on our LMS leaderboard and our analysts rated the platform as best-in-class for assessments, compliance, mobile and platform capabilities, and integrations and extensibility.

The platform supports BigBlueButton, Turnitin and Proctorio. Additionally, it features IntelliBoard and Google Analytics, and integration with [WooCommerce](https://www.selecthub.com/p/ecommerce-platforms/woocommerce/), [Shopify](https://www.selecthub.com/p/ecommerce-platforms/shopify/), [Stripe](https://www.selecthub.com/p/pos-software/stripe/), [Salesforce](https://www.selecthub.com/p/crm-software/salesforce/), [Ellucian](https://www.selecthub.com/p/hr-management-software/ellucian/) and [HubSpot](https://www.selecthub.com/p/marketing-automation-software/hubspot/). For security, Moodle offers OAuth 2.0, LDAP and two-factor authentication (2FA).

Moodle is a good choice if you’re an educational institution, nonprofit or small to mid-sized business with a limited budget. But, you might find it limiting for extensive customization, rigorous compliance and advanced support needs.

**Moodle LMS and Moodle Workplace**

Moodle Workplace is a corporate-focused LMS built on the Moodle LMS framework. While it includes all the core features of Moodle LMS, it adds specialized tools for employee training, compliance management and onboarding processes tailored to businesses.

Unlike Moodle LMS, Moodle Workplace is not open-source and requires a dual licensing model. Since it’s unavailable for direct download or standalone use, you can access it only through Moodle's network of Premium Partners. This exclusive setup ensures support and customization for corporate clients.

User reviews appreciate Moodle for its flexibility, customization options and user-friendly interface. Many value its affordability and open-source nature, which allows integration with various third-party tools and features to fit unique requirements.

MoodleCloud offers scalable, low-maintenance hosting solutions for Moodle LMS and Moodle Workplace, catering to a variety of needs. Its **Standard Plans** provide an affordable, ready-to-go option with core Moodle features, unlimited courses, integrated video conferencing and basic self-service support, making it ideal for educators and small teams.

For larger organizations, **Premium Solutions** delivers advanced scalability, excellent security and flexible customization, supporting up to millions of users.

Pricing for MoodleCloud's Standard plans ranges from $130/year (50 users) to $1,730/year (750 users).

#### Researcher's Summary:

Moodle is an open-source LMS that's really popular among educational institutions like K-12 schools and colleges. [STEM Olympiade](https://moodle.com/news/stem-olympiade-improved-inclusivity-accessibility-assessments-moodle-lms/) used Moodle LMS and ReadSpeaker's text-to-speech technology to make assessments more inclusive for students with disabilities, particularly dyslexia. In 2023-2024, 62,099 students across 712 schools in Flanders benefited from this integration, and over 96.7% of teachers were satisfied with the results.

Additionally, Moodle addresses various corporate training needs such as onboarding, compliance training and skill development.

Moodle is packed with features – you can create courses, collaborate with learners, grade assignments and more. Plus, it works quickly on mobile devices so that learning can happen anywhere. We love how flexible it is, and it can be customized to your heart's content with HTML, CSS and third-party integrations.

Its user-friendly interface is another highlight, and it is known for its intuitive navigation and ease of use, particularly for students. This makes Moodle a suitable choice even for those new to LMS platforms. A strong focus on social constructionist pedagogy emphasizes collaboration and active learning. And with Moodle’s large and active global community, you can get active support and contribute to its ongoing development.

Another area where Moodle excels is compliance. It offers a flexible, automated solution that meets the needs of organizations like the State Labour Inspectorate of Lithuania. Facing challenges with live, on-site exams and significant logistical effort, the Inspectorate turned to Moodle LMS to streamline its processes.

With features like remote exam-taking, digital signatures, proctoring and automatic certification, Moodle ensured secure and compliant exam administration. Its integration capabilities and exam tools reduced manual work, cut costs, and improved operational efficiency, helping the Inspectorate stay aligned with industry standards.

You can use, modify and share Moodle’s source code freely under the GNU General Public License. You can also find documentation, course content and resources on Moodle.org, which are available under various licenses. It also complies with the SCORM 1.2 standard for delivering web-based eLearning content, and meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards.

I tested Moodle to explore its suite of tools for course creation, user management, reporting and content management. I was particularly impressed by the ease of use and customization options, such as the ability to drag and drop files, manage courses with simple settings and integrate tools like BigBlueButton for live sessions.

The platform’s reporting tools provided detailed insights into learner progress, while its competencies feature allowed me to track skills and development across different courses.

I’ll go into more detail about Moodle’s interface, course creation tools and BigBlueButton integration in the **See It in Action** section later. That’s where I’ll break down how each feature performed during my testing.

Since Moodle is open-source, there are no licensing fees, making it a smart choice for budget-conscious schools or businesses. The open-source design, along with free plugins and themes, helps you customize your platform without extra costs.

It’s also a great option for small businesses that have technical expertise or access to IT support and can handle their own hosting, maintenance and support. By managing these elements in-house, organizations can tailor Moodle to their unique needs, from branding and layout to integrating specialized plugins.

This makes it especially appealing for small businesses aiming to build a scalable learning solution without the high costs associated with proprietary platforms.

## Key Features

* **Course Development:** Create courses from scratch or upload existing ones. Add details like name and category, and organize content with resources like quizzes. Enhance learning with badges and track performance with reports.

* **Plugin Management:** Manage all plugins from one interface for quick access. Provides plugins for different types of educational needs (e.g., universities). Connect with [MS Office 365](https://www.selecthub.com/p/collaboration-software-tools/microsoft-365/) and Google Apps.
* **BigBlueButton Integration:** Integrate with BigBlueButton and conduct live online classes, virtual office hours or group collaborations. Use features like audio, video, chat, slides, screen sharing, a multi-user whiteboard, breakout rooms, polling and emojis in real time. Record sessions for playback later.
* **Feedback:** Design surveys with multiple-choice, yes/no or text-input questions to gather participant input. Keep responses anonymous if needed, and decide whether to share results with participants or restrict them to teachers only.
* **Forums:** Use forums to encourage students to socialize, make course announcements, discuss learning content, host face-to-face sessions online and more.
* **Checklists:** Allow teachers to create checklists and help students track tasks and to-do lists.
* **Calendar:** Log important events like assignment deadlines, upcoming meetings, and course start and end dates and more on the company calendar.

## Moodle in Action: Key Insights from My Free Trial Experience

I tested Moodle firsthand through its free plan. All I had to do to get started was create an account on the website. From there, I could add up to 50 users and access key platform features like course authoring, reporting, competencies and BigBlueButton integration.

After exploring these features and capabilities as a site admin, here are my takeaways:

**User Interface and Navigation**

The first thing that caught my attention when I logged into the LMS was its clean and modern interface. The dashboard featured a well-structured layout with intuitive icons, making navigation simple. Right from the homepage, I could access recent courses, see notifications and get a snapshot of learner progress, all neatly presented.

Customization was another highlight. I could easily personalize the dashboard by adding different activities and resources. Adding “blocks” was straightforward, and I could include features like calendars, announcements, learning plans, checklists and more.

This flexibility allowed me to tailor the dashboard to suit various needs and display essential information at a glance.

![Moodle 'Add activity' pop-up with resource icons.](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-1.jpg)

In the site administration window, I found all the settings for features and tools conveniently grouped. Competencies, user management, security settings, grades, reports, appearance customization, location, language preferences and messaging options were all accessible in one central place. The layout made it easy to enable, edit or disable features as needed.

However, Moodle’s default structure and navigation could be a bit overwhelming. With so many menus, settings and options, the interface felt crowded at times, which might make it difficult for new users to locate tools or understand the platform’s terminology.

While its interface is great for instructors and students, I found that it may be complex for admins, and an extensive feature set can require time and effort to master.

**Course Creation and Content Management**

Moodle offers a variety of tools and features for managing courses, making it versatile for different teaching and training scenarios.

When I logged in as an administrator or teacher and accessed my course, everything felt intuitive and easy to navigate. The **Edit mode** toggle at the top-right corner was my starting point for making changes. Activating it allowed me to customize the course layout and add new materials.

![Moodle Content bank with 'Add' dropdown menu open.](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-2.jpg)

Adding files like documents or presentations was a breeze — I could simply drag and drop them directly from my desktop into the course. This saved me a lot of time compared to navigating through multiple upload steps.

![Moodle file upload area with drag and drop, showing file size and type limits.](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-2A.jpg)

For other activities and resources, the **Add an activity or resource** link made the process quick. Clicking it opened a menu of options like assignments, quizzes, forums and external tools. I could double-click on the desired item, and it would instantly appear in the course at the selected spot.

![Moodle 'Add activity' pop-up showing all available resources.](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-2B.jpg)

Here’s what I experienced while exploring the courses section:

* **Adding a New Course:** I could easily edit details like the course name, category, visibility, ID number, start and end dates, description, sections, layout, language, groups, and even tags. I appreciated how customizable it was, with options to set course visibility, formats and access restrictions.
* **Uploading Courses:** Bulk uploading courses was smooth, especially when managing a large training library. The drag-and-drop functionality made it easy to add multiple files or SCORM packages in one go.
* **Course Categories:** Organizing courses into categories helped me keep everything tidy and accessible. I could create parent and subcategories, which was useful for sorting courses by department or topic.
* **Course Settings:** The settings menu was packed with options to edit grading methods and activities to tailor courses to specific needs.
* **Course Formats:** Moodle supports different course formats, such as weekly, topic-based, or single activity. I liked being able to switch formats based on the course structure.
* **Course Homepage:** Each course had its own homepage where I could add resources, activities and blocks. Customization options made it easy to design an engaging and user-friendly layout.
* **Restrict Access and Stealth Activities:** These features gave me control over who could access certain content and when. Restrict access allowed me to set prerequisites, while stealth activities let me keep content hidden until I chose to link it.
* **Course Relative Dates:** This feature was handy for courses with rolling enrollments. Instead of fixed dates, I could set activities and deadlines relative to a learner’s start date, which kept the experience flexible.
* **Course FAQs:** Moodle includes a helpful FAQ section for course management. It provided quick answers to common questions and acted as a great reference when I was setting up new courses.

**Content and Question Bank**

The Content Bank is your go-to tool for creating, storing, and organizing H5P activities in Moodle. You can easily create new H5P activities with just a click or upload existing ones to edit as needed. It’s a simple way to keep your course content engaging and interactive.

What makes it even more useful is its flexibility. You can automatically download H5P activity types through CRON jobs or manually add them, depending on what works best for your setup.

This ensures you always have access to the tools you need without unnecessary hassle. Whether you’re building content from scratch or updating old materials, the Content Bank makes the process smooth and efficient.

![Moodle 'All factor report' page showing user login details and authentication methods.](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-3.jpg)

The Content Bank puts you in control of how your materials are shared. You can decide whether to make content public or keep it private. The built-in search tool was another standout for me — it made managing large courses much easier by quickly locating H5P content across various courses and categories.

When I tested course restoration, all Content Bank items transferred seamlessly. However, the person restoring the course became the ‘owner’ of the content, which determined who could edit it. While this ownership rule might require some planning for team-based work, the feature felt well-integrated and practical for managing course resources effectively.

![Moodle 'Choose a question type to add' pop-up in the Question bank.](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-3A.jpg)

The Question Bank really expands your options for creating assessments. It offers a variety of question types, including MCQs, matching, essays, short answers, numerical questions and more.

You can link these questions with your H5P content, which further integrates the learning experience. This means that you can connect interactive elements like videos, games or other activities with your assessments, making the process even more dynamic for learners.

**Reporting**

I could generate reports for almost anything I needed, including comments, backups, configuration changes, event lists, antivirus failures, logs, live logs, performance overviews, question instances, security checks, system status, theme usage, event monitoring rules and even spam cleaner results. It felt like having complete control over data insights at my fingertips.

![Moodle Reports page with a 'Register your site' warning message.](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-3B.jpg)

Creating a report was simple. I started by choosing a source, like courses, users or badges, and then customized it by adding relevant columns, applying filters and setting sorting preferences. I could even control who accessed the reports, assigning them to system roles, cohorts or specific users.

Scheduling reports was a game-changer. I set up automated deliveries, chose the format, defined the frequency and selected recipients. As an admin, I also appreciated being able to limit the number of reports or disable live editing to optimize system performance.

When I explored the All Factor Report, it gave me a clear overview of all authentication factors used on the site in a neat table format. I accessed it from **Site Administration> Reports > MFA > All factor report**, and it provided a comprehensive list of factors, including any locked users.

![Moodle 'Add new competency framework' page with form fields.](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-4.jpg)

What stood out was how easy it was to manage user access. I could add or remove users individually or handle them in bulk, which saved a lot of time when dealing with larger groups.

This report added a layer of transparency to the site's authentication system, making it simple to monitor and adjust factors as needed. It felt like a practical tool for ensuring secure and efficient user management.

**Competencies**

The Competencies feature allows you to define specific skills or knowledge that learners need to demonstrate. Administrators can create competency frameworks, and both teachers and managers can link them to courses or activities, giving everyone a clear roadmap of learning goals.

I enabled competencies from Site Administration> Competencies and created competency frameworks. I then added competencies to learning plans and assigned these plans to individual students or cohorts. This made it easy to track progress and align learning objectives across courses. Teachers could even link competencies to specific activities, ensuring that every task ties back to a measurable goal.

![Moodle 'Add a new course' page with form fields in Category 1](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-5.jpg)

I appreciated the detailed reporting options. For example, as a teacher, I could manually rate student competencies from the Competency breakdown report or let activity completion automatically update a learner's competency progress. Learners could view their plans, upload evidence of prior learning, and request reviews.

The built-in statistics gave me insights into individual or group progress, which helped refine instructional strategies and track overall success.

**BigBlueButton Integration**

I could set up a session by selecting BigBlueButton from the activity chooser within a course, adding a name and description, and customizing options like a welcome message for the chat box. I appreciated the option to require moderator approval before students could join the session, providing additional control over participation.

![Moodle BigBlueButton category settings page with configuration options.](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Moodle-6.jpg)

Once I set the conference time, a link was generated that students could use to join the session when it was live. The integration with Moodle’s calendar made it easy to schedule and track upcoming sessions. I also noted the option to allow guest access, which was useful for external participants, though this required the administrator to enable it first.

Participants could choose whether to use their microphones and webcams, and I had control over their permissions as the moderator. The platform supported interactive features like presentations, polls, chat, screen sharing and a whiteboard.

As an admin, I found it straightforward to adjust session defaults, including whether to show participant profile photos or control access to recordings.

## Limitations

* **Doesn’t Offer Built-In eCommerce Capabilities:** Moodle supports eCommerce capabilities only with partner integrations. It doesn’t support features like course selling, discounts and promotions, transaction history and subscription management entirely out of the box. On the contrary, its competitors, Docebo and Cornerstone offer a full suite of ready-to-use eCommerce tools.
* **Lack of Video Editing Tools:** Although users can upload videos to Moodle, there are no built-in features for editing, like cutting or adding captions. This means instructors can’t easily modify their video content or add necessary subtitles within the platform.
* **Doesn’t Support Video Conferencing Capabilities:** The solution doesn’t offer features like virtual classrooms, screen sharing, on-demand recording and breakout rooms fully out of the box and requires partner integrations to run these tools.
* **Unsupported Media Playback:** Not all devices or web browsers support Moodle’s media features, particularly older browsers that don’t support HTML5 video or audio. As a result, learners using outdated devices may struggle to view or listen to course materials properly.
* **Limited AI Capabilities:** If you’re looking for an open-source LMS with AI capabilities, Moodle may not be the best choice for you. It doesn’t support features like AI-based content translation, course recommendations, tagging and search, and it doesn’t use NLP technology, either. However, it does offer AI-based reporting and conversational AI tools.

## Training Resources

* **MoodleDocs:** Access an extensive collection of product training articles and guides. Learn how to create courses, manage users, use the Moodle app, access your site and more.

Same with some very recognizable software programs, like Wordpress and Mozilla Firefox.According to our JumpStart Platform, Moodle supports 83% of the LMS features businesses need. In addition to learner analytics, Moodle has calendars, dashboards, text editing, SCORM compatibility, learning paths, user management and course creation, the last one via an H5P integration.Moodle ranked first on our LMS leaderboard and our analysts rated the platform as best-in-class for assessments, compliance, mobile and platform capabilities, and integrations and extensibility. The platform supports BigBlueButton, Turnitin and Proctorio. Additionally, it features IntelliBoard and Google Analytics, and integration with WooCommerce, Shopify, Stripe, Salesforce, Ellucian and HubSpot. For security, Moodle offers OAuth 2.0, LDAP and two-factor authentication (2FA).Moodle is a good choice if you’re an educational institution, nonprofit or small to mid-sized business with a limited budget. But, you might find it limiting for extensive customization, rigorous compliance and advanced support needs.Moodle LMS and Moodle WorkplaceMoodle Workplace is a corporate-focused LMS built on the Moodle LMS framework. While it includes all the core features of Moodle LMS, it adds specialized tools for employee training, compliance management and onboarding processes tailored to businesses.Unlike Moodle LMS, Moodle Workplace is not open-source and requires a dual licensing model. Since it’s unavailable for direct download or standalone use, you can access it only through Moodle's network of Premium Partners. This exclusive setup ensures support and customization for corporate clients.User reviews appreciate Moodle for its flexibility, customization options and user-friendly interface. Many value its affordability and open-source nature, which allows integration with various third-party tools and features to fit unique requirements.MoodleCloud offers scalable, low-maintenance hosting solutions for Moodle LMS and Moodle Workplace, catering to a variety of needs. Its Standard Plans provide an affordable, ready-to-go option with core Moodle features, unlimited courses, integrated video conferencing and basic self-service support, making it ideal for educators and small teams. For larger organizations, Premium Solutions delivers advanced scalability, excellent security and flexible customization, supporting up to millions of users.Pricing for MoodleCloud's Standard plans ranges from $130/year (50 users) to $1,730/year (750 users).Whether you're delivering educational content, workplace training or managing complex learning paths, MoodleCloud ensures reliable, secure hosting with 24/7 support for Premium users. You can start with a free trial to explore its features, making it accessible for institutions and businesses of all sizes. Our Research Process for MoodleTo evaluate Moodle, I signed up for its free plan. I also compared it with Brightspace, Absorb LMS, Docebo and LearnUpon using the data from our software selection platform and research compiled by our research team after in-depth analysis of the edtech space.I also reviewed the vendor website, product documentation and community discussions. I read about its most popular capabilities like AI integration, content authoring and reporting, multi-tenant architecture, mobile learning and customizations. Finally, I reviewed user feedback on sites such as G2, Capterra, Software Advice and TrustRadius to understand how people use Moodle and what experiences they’ve had.",

"reviewBody": "Moodle is an open-source LMS that's really popular among educational institutions like K-12 schools and colleges. STEM Olympiade used Moodle LMS and ReadSpeaker's text-to-speech technology to make assessments more inclusive for students with disabilities, particularly dyslexia. In 2023-2024, 62,099 students across 712 schools in Flanders benefited from this integration, and over 96.7% of teachers were satisfied with the results.Additionally, Moodle addresses various corporate training needs such as onboarding, compliance training and skill development.Moodle is packed with features – you can create courses, collaborate with learners, grade assignments and more. And with Moodle’s large and active global community, you can get active support and contribute to its ongoing development.Another area where Moodle excels is compliance. It also complies with the SCORM 1.2 standard for delivering web-based eLearning content, and meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards.I tested Moodle to explore its suite of tools for course creation, user management, reporting and content management. I was particularly impressed by the ease of use and customization options, such as the ability to drag and drop files, manage courses with simple settings and integrate tools like BigBlueButton for live sessions. The platform’s reporting tools provided detailed insights into learner progress, while its competencies feature allowed me to track skills and development across different courses.I’ll go into more detail about Moodle’s interface, course creation tools and BigBlueButton integration in the See It in Action section later. That’s where I’ll break down how each feature performed during my testing.Since Moodle is open-source, there are no licensing fees, making it a smart choice for budget-conscious schools or businesses. This makes it especially appealing for small businesses aiming to build a scalable learning solution without the high costs associated with proprietary platforms."
