## What Is Canvas?

**Industry Specialties:** Serves all industries.

Canvas is an all-in-one learning management system for building courses, enrolling students, grading assignments and analyzing learners’ progress. Its multi-tenant architecture and customizable setup ensure organizations of all sizes and requirements benefit from it, whether you’re a K-12 school, college, university, or business helping employees develop new skills.

If you’re transitioning from in-person learning, Canvas helps ease the shift. It supports collaboration between students and instructors, reduces confusion around assignments and helps keep everyone engaged.

A learning management system that promises a lot can come up short in terms of availability and workload handling. However, the vendor has it covered by hosting Canvas on AWS, which is known for its reliable service.

Despite high availability, Canvas supports only 75% of the core LMS features out of the box. However, you can fill in the gaps with partner integrations, which add another 8% of functionality. This shows that the vendor is focused on giving you the flexibility to build what you need.

Canvas can automatically enroll learners from Student Information Systems; no more verifying missed or duplicated information.

You can adopt Canvas even if you’re already using an LMS tool; the platform integrates with the Edu App Center, a marketplace for learning content apps. It also works with many popular team productivity suites, like Google Workspace and [Microsoft 365](https://www.selecthub.com/p/collaboration-software-tools/microsoft-365/) and integrates with plagiarism checkers, including Turnitin.

The platform ranks as a user favorite in our analysis with 91% of users saying they would recommend it for eLearning.

People praise its functionality, especially the real-time collaboration with notifications, grading and announcements. However, some users report technical glitches, a steep learning curve for advanced features and rigid due date policies that can be challenging for late submissions.

You can create and offer professional development courses on a single learning management system without burning a hole in your pocket with the Canvas Catalog. Certifications enhance your course offerings, and the Canvas Credentials add-on offers you an easy way to do it.

When I tested the platform, a couple of features really stood out. I particularly liked that Canvas flags dead links with the course link validator, and an AI-powered accessibility checker proactively scans content for readability issues.

Canvas learning management system is partially open-source, and pricing isn’t publicly available.

**Our Research Process for Canvas**

I took Canvas for a test run by signing up for the Canvas-For-Teacher free account. After defining the testing scope, I shortlisted course creation, user management, communication, integrations, mobile apps and student metrics tracking as my test cases.

I also explored the vendor’s website extensively for Canvas’ features, solutions and customer stories.

Next, I referred to the LMS data in our selection platform to see how Canvas compares to other top learning management systems like [Moodle](https://www.selecthub.com/p/lms-software/moodle/), [BrightSpace](https://www.selecthub.com/p/lms-software/brightspace/), [Absorb](https://www.selecthub.com/p/lms-software/absorb-lms/) and [Docebo](https://www.selecthub.com/p/lms-software/docebo/).

To round out my research, I reviewed vendor documentation, case studies and YouTube videos to understand the product and its functionality. Product reviews on Reddit, G2, GetApp, PCMag and Trustpilot helped me form an informed opinion of Canvas as an LMS.

* **Mobile Accessibility:** The Canvas mobile app, praised by 72% of users, offers a responsive design and on-the-go access on various devices.
* **Best-In-Class Integration Capabilities:** 55% of users said Canvas integrates well with a wide range of third-party tools and services, and helps create a customized learning environment.
* **Effective Communication and Collaboration Features:** 45% of users appreciate Canvas’ communication tools, specifically discussion boards, announcements and email.
* **Personalized Course Design:** Canvas offers flexible course designs, allowing instructors to create personalized learning experiences for their students, said 40% of users.

**What Users Like**

* “This platform is ideal for academic and corporate environments that require structured learning. It takes some time to set up correctly, but the customization options are worth it. It was much easier to monitor development thanks to its excellent grading and feedback system.” - [Paul Posea](https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-posea-646094131/), Outreach Specialist at [Superside](https://www.superside.com/)
* “I have been using Canvas LMS for over a year now to help streamline training programs, organize educational materials, and manage coursework efficiently. The reason why I never switched to another LMS is its ability to automate complex grading workflows, which saves time and reduces errors.” - [Ann Monis](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ann-monis-mba-psyd-43196b24/), CEO & Clinical and Forensic Psychologist at Medical Anti Aging

#### Cons

* **Technical Glitches and Bugs:** Nearly 40% of users report experiencing technical issues, such as system crashes, data loss and bugs.
* **Steep Learning Curve for Complex Features:** According to 30% of users, while the overall interface is user-friendly, more advanced features have a steep learning curve.
* **Rigid Due Date Policies:** Some users mentioned that Canvas's rigid due date rules can be challenging for students who submit work late due to technical issues or other reasons.

**What Users Don’t Like**

* “Its main disadvantage is the learning curve. Setting it up properly can take a lot of time, especially for new users who might find the interface overwhelming. Additionally, improving the user experience requires extra effort since some elements, such as navigation and content organization, could be more intuitive.”- Paul Posea, Outreach Specialist at Superside
* “The area where Canvas LMS could improve is its reporting customization. While the platform provides detailed analytics, filtering and extracting specific data sets can be time-consuming. Pulling reports on engagement trends or comparing performance across different groups is not as seamless as it could be.” - Ann Monis, CEO & Clinical and Forensic Psychologist at Medical Anti Aging

#### Researcher's Summary:

Canvas is a learning management system for online, in-person and hybrid learning in various educational settings. A handy side pane and breadcrumbs navigation made the user experience smooth during my test run.

The learning curve was short and I started on course creation and student enrollment within hours. You’re never really stuck; there are a lot of ways to get things done.

Coupling mastery paths with grades and rubrics was my favorite feature in this learning management system, though the actual magic happened with the Learning Mastery Gradebook. If you're managing large groups, seeing student performance at a glance with color-coded indicators saves time. Plus, reusable rubrics and the Canvas Commons content library meant I didn't have to start from scratch every time.

A great example of Canvas in action is [Ent Credit Union](https://www.instructure.com/resources/case-studies/ent-credit-unions-path-modern-learning-canvas). They successfully implemented cohort-based training for their 15,000 employees despite the challenges of a dispersed workforce. They achieved this with Canvas, using its [Canva](https://www.selecthub.com/p/graphic-design-software/canva-pro/) and YouTube integrations to offer creative learning tools to workers. Additionally, internal stakeholders could monitor skill development with Canvas Credentials.

However, many Reddit users said Canvas grading needs improvement, and grade statistics are missing, so they must resort to Excel, especially for large classes.

One Reddit user shared a clever workaround that stuck with me — they addressed the limitations of Canvas quizzes and the grading system by using PDF files to test their learners, a format they were already using for assignments. Where there’s a will, there’s a way; marrying technology with existing systems can be a middle path to get your money’s worth.

In conclusion, Canvas LMS stands out as a user-friendly and flexible platform for creating engaging learning experiences. While some technical hiccups and adoption issues for advanced features exist, the overall benefits of Canvas significantly outweigh its limitations.

## Key Features

* **Canvas Studio:** Mix written lessons with multimedia to keep learners engaged and improve retention. Capture webcam feeds and screen recordings without needing to integrate video software.
* **Course Analytics:** View engagement metrics to identify learners who need help and teaching gaps that need plugging.
* **SpeedGrader:** You can free your instructors from the overwhelm of grading papers with an exclusive assessment hub within Canvas. It automatically updates grades and allows feedback through inline comments and multimedia options.
* **Outcomes:** As a teacher, you’re already balancing lesson planning, grading, classroom management and administrative work. Setting and tracking personalized outcomes can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back unless you have a learning management system like Canvas to tie outcomes to assignments, assessments and rubrics.
* **Mobile App:** Canvas offers exclusive, separate mobile apps for instructors, learners and parents. You can assign grades, track engagement, submit assignments and monitor progress from anywhere with an interface specific to your role.
* **Dashboard:** Keep track of what’s important — view courses, start new ones, check grades and notifications, and stay up-to-date with upcoming events via an integrated calendar on the dashboard.
* **Assignments:** You can create assignments with a rich-text editor, group students based on similar learning needs, and assign them different deadlines based on competency. As an instructor, you can choose to lighten your workload by opting for peer reviews for assessments.
* **Rubrics:** Not all learners learn in the same way, and rubrics help you identify what they excel at and where they need help. Plus, they allow you to assess life skills, including critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving.
* **Conferences:** You can host lectures, office hours and group meetings via BigBlueButton, [Microsoft Teams](https://www.selecthub.com/p/video-conferencing-software/microsoft-teams/) and [Google Meet](https://www.selecthub.com/p/business-phone-systems/google-meet/) within Canvas.
* **Attendance:** Canvas integrates with an attendance-marking application, the Roll Call tool via LTI.
* **ePortfolios:** Your learners can improve their employability and promotion chances by displaying their learning achievements in employee details on HR platforms and LinkedIn.

## See It In Action: Workforce Management Course for Cargo Logistics

You don’t know a platform until you build something real with it. So that's exactly what I did. I created a full workforce management course in Canvas, aimed at the cargo logistics industry, and tested every major feature like a real instructor and student would. This is your inside look at what Canvas gets right — and where it still needs work.

**User Enrollment & Management**

**1) Adding Students to Courses**

You can add students manually to the platform, or have Canvas do it for you. For this trial, I created two student email addresses and added them to my course. It triggered an email invite that I accepted from the respective student accounts.

![Canvas Screenshot 1](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Add-People.jpg)

Canvas allows self-enrollment by sharing a secret key with students. Or you can self-register without the secret key if your parent organization has enabled it.

Open registration is also an option to sign up for public courses, which can be useful if you’re planning to launch a course marketplace.

**2) Permissions**

I also enrolled a third user as an observer who had view-only access to the assignments and quizzes. To verify permissions, I changed the observer's role to a student, and they were then able to complete and submit the assignment.

**Course Creation & Organization**

**1) Content Modules**

As an instructor, I created a cargo logistics course with an assignment and a discussion board. Like any content management system, Canvas allows previewing courses before publishing, so you can explore its features and add modules, pages, assignments, discussions and quizzes as desired. Learners can see the content only when you publish it, and I can confirm that modules aren't visible unless you publish them as well.

![Canvas Screenshot 2](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Cargo-01.jpg)

I could add content using the + button on the **Assignments, Quizzes and Pages** tabs, respectively. From **Settings**, I could design the side pane for my learners, connect to LTI systems, integrate with external tools, and turn course features on/off.

When creating courses, the Canvas Commons repository is worth checking out if you’re looking for inspiration. Even if you start from scratch, Canvas has a convenient student view that lets you check out how your course will look before publishing it.

![Canvas Screenshot 3](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Student-View-04.jpg)

**2) Assignments**

Canvas gives you a lot of content control — you can decide the submission type (URL, text or file upload), enable peer reviews, and select anonymous grading. You’re the master of when the content goes public and for how long it’s out there.

![Canvas Screenshot 4](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Assignments.jpg)

**3) Quizzes**

Unsure if your learners grasped a concept? Create a practice quiz in Canvas. For learners confident in their knowledge, administer a graded quiz. You can also gather feedback on your recent lesson with an ungraded survey. Canvas has it all.

Choose the question type, decide the time limits and set Mastery Paths to assess how many learners exceeded expectations.

**4) File Uploads and Multimedia**

With the rich-text editor, I could add links, insert images and embed videos in pages, assignments and quizzes. I could also add images from within Canvas.

Editing is convenient and straightforward — there are multiple paths to accomplishing certain tasks. For example, you can upload files via the HTML editor or the **Files** tab on the side pane.

**5) Submission Workflows**

To submit my assignment, I logged in as a student and selected it from the **To Do** list on the **Dashboard**. It opened the editor, where I could either write my answer or upload a file.

With Canvas, instructors can specify the file upload format so they don’t have to switch between different file types when grading. If you’ve set it to .doc or PDF, Canvas will not accept any other format.

As a teacher, I could allow resubmissions, and as a student, I could resubmit the assignment.

**Assessments**

Evaluating students with a learning management system should be easier than grading them manually. To check if it’s true for Canvas, I created and marked assessments and quizzes and created rubrics to evaluate students beyond grades.

**1) Gradebook**

As a teacher, I had grading permissions, so I could flexibly adjust student scores and provide feedback. And as a student, I could view my grades, check instructor feedback, and use the what-if grade feature to estimate my potential final grade based on hypothetical scores.

![Canvas Screenshot 5](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Gradebook.jpg)

The gradebook also has a search feature for finding assignments and student names, which is handy if you have a large learner set.

You can import grade books as CSV files, but I found it messy. Lengthy column headers shifted values down, causing misalignment within the CSV grade book.

I was disappointed that the gradebook didn’t automatically wrap extra-long column headers, which got cut off at the end. Column resizing is available, but the overall experience felt clunky.

**2) Rubrics**

You can use pre-set rubrics or create your own, which Canvas saves to the course for future use. I created a new rubric for my class and used the **Find Rubrics** option to link it to my assignment and quiz.

![Canvas Screenshot 6](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Rubrics-01.jpg)

**3) Mastery Paths**

To set up Mastery Paths, your content should already be in place, whether you’ve planned a quiz, assignment or discussion. I created an advanced assignment for students who exceeded expectations, and then selected it when setting up the Mastery Path.

![Canvas Screenshot 7](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Mastery-Paths.jpg)

![Canvas Screenshot 8](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Mastery-Paths-01.jpg)

**Communication & Collaboration Tools**

I also tried creating discussion boards and posting announcements.

**1) Discussion Boards**

Setting up discussion boards was straightforward. Teachers and learners received instant notifications for new responses and could view a badge indicator upon login. I could expand the discussion threads, reply directly or mark responses as unread to review later.

![Canvas Screenshot 9](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Discussions.jpg)

**2) Announcements and Messaging**

I tested for announcements, email alerts and in-app messaging. I could schedule announcements or send them instantly, reply to them, and mark them as read or unread. However, I noticed that notifications on the Canvas Student mobile app didn’t update until I refreshed the page.

**Course Analytics**

The **Assignments** tab had the **New Analytics** option that displayed course grade, weekly online activity, communication logs, due date and submitted status. I also noted that metrics were downloadable.

![Canvas Screenshot 10](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/New-Analytics.jpg)

**Learning Mastery Gradebook**

In addition to the traditional grade book, Canvas offers outcome-based assessment by color-coding mastery levels in the grade sheet. This allows you to instantly identify the learners who need personalized learning paths for particular modules.

![Canvas Screenshot 11](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Outcomes.jpg)

[Source](https://youtu.be/qSIZwLUb4hI?si=kazvjAeLQTMq1GcO&t=188)

**Integrations & Mobile Experience**

My trial version didn’t have many integrations, but I could connect to Lucid and Google Workspace. I could sync the Canvas calendar with my Google calendar and add a Google meeting link to an announcement, assignment or quiz.

![Canvas Screenshot 12](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Canvas-Lucid-Integration.jpg)

The mobile app enables taking quizzes and participating in discussions. I loved that I could reply to announcements and notifications from my email client.

You can set push notifications for pretty much anything — due date changes, content updates, announcements, grading, invitations to groups, web conferences and comments on submissions.

"description": "Canvas is an all-in-one learning management system for building courses, enrolling students, grading assignments and analyzing learners’ progress. Its multi-tenant architecture and customizable setup ensure organizations of all sizes and requirements benefit from it, whether you’re a K-12 school, college, university, or business helping employees develop new skills. If you’re transitioning from in-person learning, Canvas helps ease the shift. It supports collaboration between students and instructors, reduces confusion around assignments and helps keep everyone engaged.A learning management system that promises a lot can come up short in terms of availability and workload handling. However, the vendor has it covered by hosting Canvas on AWS, which is known for its reliable service.Despite high availability, Canvas supports only 75% of the core LMS features out of the box. However, you can fill in the gaps with partner integrations, which add another 8% of functionality. This shows that the vendor is focused on giving you the flexibility to build what you need.Canvas can automatically enroll learners from Student Information Systems; no more verifying missed or duplicated information. You can adopt Canvas even if you’re already using an LMS tool; the platform integrates with the Edu App Center, a marketplace for learning content apps. It also works with many popular team productivity suites, like Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 and integrates with plagiarism checkers, including Turnitin. The platform ranks as a user favorite in our analysis with 91% of users saying they would recommend it for eLearning.People praise its functionality, especially the real-time collaboration with notifications, grading and announcements. However, some users report technical glitches, a steep learning curve for advanced features and rigid due date policies that can be challenging for late submissions. You can create and offer professional development courses on a single learning management system without burning a hole in your pocket with the Canvas Catalog. Certifications enhance your course offerings, and the Canvas Credentials add-on offers you an easy way to do it.When I tested the platform, a couple of features really stood out. I particularly liked that Canvas flags dead links with the course link validator, and an AI-powered accessibility checker proactively scans content for readability issues.Canvas learning management system is partially open-source, and pricing isn’t publicly available. Our Research Process for CanvasI took Canvas for a test run by signing up for the Canvas-For-Teacher free account. After defining the testing scope, I shortlisted course creation, user management, communication, integrations, mobile apps and student metrics tracking as my test cases.I also explored the vendor’s website extensively for Canvas’ features, solutions and customer stories.Next, I referred to the LMS data in our selection platform to see how Canvas compares to other top learning management systems like Moodle, BrightSpace, Absorb and Docebo. To round out my research, I reviewed vendor documentation, case studies and YouTube videos to understand the product and its functionality. Product reviews on Reddit, G2, GetApp, PCMag and Trustpilot helped me form an informed opinion of Canvas as an LMS.",

"reviewBody": "Canvas is a learning management system for online, in-person and hybrid learning in various educational settings. A handy side pane and breadcrumbs navigation made the user experience smooth during my test run.The learning curve was short and I started on course creation and student enrollment within hours. You’re never really stuck; there are a lot of ways to get things done.Coupling mastery paths with grades and rubrics was my favorite feature in this learning management system, though the actual magic happened with the Learning Mastery Gradebook. If you're managing large groups, seeing student performance at a glance with color-coded indicators saves time. Plus, reusable rubrics and the Canvas Commons content library meant I didn't have to start from scratch every time.A great example of Canvas in action is Ent Credit Union. They successfully implemented cohort-based training for their 15,000 employees despite the challenges of a dispersed workforce. They achieved this with Canvas, using its Canva and YouTube integrations to offer creative learning tools to workers. While some technical hiccups and adoption issues for advanced features exist, the overall benefits of Canvas significantly outweigh its limitations."
