#### Researcher's Summary:

After spending time with Sugar CRM, I was able to learn some of its strengths and limitations in depth. It has impressive customization capabilities — I could configure modules and fields exactly how I wanted them. The BPM (Business Process Management) system also impressed me with its flexibility in setting up automated workflows.

On the support front, I found SugarClub lessons beneficial for learning the platform. The online knowledge base and active community forums were helpful when I got stuck. However, troubleshooting could be challenging, and I encountered glitches that required workarounds.

There were a few hiccups during testing. The most notable one was with integrations — many essential connections require either coding knowledge or third-party providers, which isn't ideal for non-technical users. The reporting features are basic and inflexible, especially when dealing with large datasets. Users say generating large reports (over 200K records) requires breaking them down into smaller chunks.

The platform's performance had some ups and downs. I noticed slowdowns during peak hours with the cloud version. The interface, while clean, sometimes felt overwhelming with the amount of data displayed on each record, requiring lots of scrolling or multiple tab openings to find specific information.

While free trials are invaluable, I wanted to know how Sugar CRM performs in real business environments. [Tetley Harris](https://www.sugarcrm.com/au/customers/case-studies/tetley/), North America's largest private-label tea packing company, is a good example. Their outdated spreadsheet system limited the sales team's effectiveness, allowing them to track only about 100 customers and focus on just 10-12 big opportunities per year, while smaller prospects were overlooked.

The results of implementing Sugar CRM were remarkable — once integrated with Outlook, Tetley’s user adoption increased rapidly, and the team expanded from tracking 100 leads to managing over 1,200 active accounts. Shortly after implementation, they opened and closed 400 opportunities.

For businesses considering Sugar CRM, I'd say its biggest strength is its customization potential, but this comes with a caveat — many advanced features require significant technical expertise or additional investment. Also, we recommend considering the license-based pricing for larger teams and the need for custom development to achieve certain functionalities.

The platform automates repetitive tasks, triggers actions based on specific events and maintains consistent follow-up schedules while also providing real-time notifications.
* **Competitor Management:** Scoring 100 in our analyst evaluation of competitor management capabilities, the CRM lets you create detailed competitor records and add them to a customizable newsfeed for easy tracking. The list view search helps you filter and find specific competitor information using customizable filters that work for both regular and competitor accounts.
* **Lead Generation & Scoring:** You can create web-to-lead forms through the campaigns module and place them on your external website to capture leads. Sugar Sell's SugarPredict feature includes a Leads Conversion Prediction dashlet that shows you how likely a lead is to convert, complete with conversion scores and key performance indicators.
* **Product Management:** This feature lets you manage your entire product catalog, allowing you to define, categorize and organize all your products or services, including quoted, revenue and purchased line items. The product catalog dashlet lets you access your catalog directly from opportunity records and add active products as revenue line items.
* **Sales Forecasting:** Sugar Sell helps predict sales and build forecasting worksheets, which lets you work towards sales quotas at individual, team and organizational levels. The forecasting worksheet includes four key components — a header with team/person selectors and quotas, an opportunity review tab, a commitment tab for updating team quotas and an intelligence pane that analyzes your current forecast.
  
## See It in Action: Creating a Custom Module in Sugar Sell

The users I interviewed raved about Sugar's customization capabilities, so I decided to put them to the test myself. I wanted to see how flexible the platform is when it comes to creating custom modules.

  
1\. The process was very straightforward. Starting from my Home page, I navigated to the **Admin** section through the profile icon. Under **Developer Tools**, I clicked on the **Module Builder**.

2\. When I opened the **Module Builder**, I could see all the existing packages laid out. I started by creating a **New Package**, which is essentially a container for custom modules. I filled out the basic package details and clicked **Save**.

3\. While you can technically add multiple modules to a single package, it’s better to follow the best practice of creating one module per package — it just makes everything cleaner and easier to manage. I selected the required fields for my module, opted for the basic module type and hit **Save**.

4\. Then, I clicked **Deploy** to activate my package. After a brief wait, I could see my new module appear both in the **Module Builder** and the navigation bar. I had just created my first custom module from scratch!

One limitation I discovered during this process is that activity streams aren't available for custom modules. However, given the system’s overall flexibility, this is a minor tradeoff.

  
I have to say, the customization process lived up to the hype. It's intuitive enough for beginners while delivering the depth that power users need. The UI made what could have been a complex process feel very easy.

  
## Limitations

At the time of this review, these are the limitations according to user feedback:

  
* Many essential integrations such as accounting, business intelligence, email marketing, ERP, messaging platforms, project management tools, video conferencing and eCommerce platforms require third-party providers since the platform doesn't support them out of the box.
* While Sugar CRM allows linking related campaigns, it doesn't support true campaign hierarchies or parent-child campaign relationships.
* The platform lacks built-in private messaging features for direct team communication and collaboration.

It has impressive customization capabilities — I could configure modules and fields exactly how I wanted them. The BPM (Business Process Management) system also impressed me with its flexibility in setting up automated workflows.On the support front, I found SugarClub lessons beneficial for learning the platform. The online knowledge base and active community forums were helpful when I got stuck. However, troubleshooting could be challenging, and I encountered glitches that required workarounds.There were a few hiccups during testing. The most notable one was with integrations — many essential connections require either coding knowledge or third-party providers, which isn't ideal for non-technical users. The reporting features are basic and inflexible, especially when dealing with large datasets. Users say generating large reports (over 200K records) requires breaking them down into smaller chunks.The platform's performance had some ups and downs. I noticed slowdowns during peak hours with the cloud version. The interface, while clean, sometimes felt overwhelming with the amount of data displayed on each record, requiring lots of scrolling or multiple tab openings to find specific information.While free trials are invaluable, I wanted to know how Sugar CRM performs in real business environments. Tetley Harris, North America's largest private-label tea packing company, is a good example. Their outdated spreadsheet system limited the sales team's effectiveness, allowing them to track only about 100 customers and focus on just 10-12 big opportunities per year, while smaller prospects were overlooked.The results of implementing Sugar CRM were remarkable — once integrated with Outlook, Tetley’s user adoption increased rapidly, and the team expanded from tracking 100 leads to managing over 1,200 active accounts. Shortly after implementation, they opened and closed 400 opportunities.For businesses considering Sugar CRM, I'd say its biggest strength is its customization potential, but this comes with a caveat — many advanced features require significant technical expertise or additional investment. Also, we recommend considering the license-based pricing for larger teams and the need for custom development to achieve certain functionalities."
