## What Is CMiC?

**Industry Specialties:** Include but not limited to concrete, electrical/teledata, general contractor, mechanical/HVAC, solar and utility contractor

CMiC is a construction management platform built to connect the front office, the jobsite and the back office in a single system. Designed for general contractors, subcontractors, and civil and highway firms, it combines project controls, financial management, procurement and field collaboration in one database.

CMiC also plays well with other tools. Open APIs and integrations connect it to BIM platforms, scheduling software and third-party applications, helping firms reduce manual entry and keep data consistent.

Many users say the system can be tailored to fit unique business processes, and they find it strong at managing large volumes of project and financial data.

At the same time, CMiC comes with challenges. Users frequently mention that the interface feels complicated and not particularly user-friendly. Training and onboarding are often cited as weak spots, with firms noting that the system takes time to learn.

**Our Research Approach for CMiC**

I watched YouTube tutorials to see the software in action and get a feel for the interface and read case studies to learn how different contractors are actually using it on projects. I also tapped into our own software selection platform to see where CMiC stands out and where it falls short compared to competitors. And I reviewed the vendor’s website and product resources to confirm details.

#### Researcher's Summary:

What I found most impressive about CMiC is that it pulls three of the construction industry’s most painful processes — accounting, project management and procurement — into one place. It eliminates the hand-offs and double-entry that usually happen when these functions live in separate systems. For contractors, that single-database design means fewer surprises, faster reporting and a lot less chasing down data.

Accounting is where CMiC shows its muscle. Real-time job costing, automated WIP reports and intercompany entries make it far easier for firms with multiple projects or business units to stay on top of financials. You don’t just see numbers at month-end, you see the impact of costs and labor as they happen. CFOs and project executives receive clarity they rarely get from spreadsheets or entry-level tools.

On the project management side, the value is in visibility. Budgets update automatically when subs are added, RFIs move through defined approval paths and change orders reflect both cost and schedule impact right away. That kind of linkage helps superintendents and PMs avoid the classic “surprise overrun” at closeout. When paired with CMiC’s dashboards — which scored a perfect 100 in our analysis, beating out rivals like eCMS and Viewpoint Spectrum — managers can drill from a KPI straight into the source document without ever exporting to Excel.

Procurement rounds out the picture. CMiC makes prequalifying subs, managing compliance docs, and comparing bids much more traceable. In practice, that means you know whether the sub pouring your concrete has valid insurance and a clean safety record before you hand them the job. It’s less guesswork, more accountability — especially useful for highway and civil firms juggling dozens of subcontractor bids.

The biggest downside I found is that CMiC isn’t easy to learn. Contractors on Reddit and in reviews point to a clunky interface, weak onboarding and modules like Imaging Control that sometimes just don’t work as expected. Some firms even reported losing staff during rollout because frustration ran so high.

That tells you what kind of product CMiC is: powerful, but unforgiving if you don’t invest in training and change management.

**Bottom line:** CMiC isn’t a lightweight point solution. It’s a construction-first platform strong enough to run your accounting, project management and procurement in one system. For larger contractors and civil firms, the payoff is worth the grind. For smaller or less complex operations, the cost and learning curve may outweigh the benefits.

## Key Features

* **Construction Accounting:** The system handles accounting across multiple companies and currencies. If one branch buys materials for another, it records the intercompany entry automatically. At month-end or year-end, the system walks you through closing your books step by step and records every action so you have a full audit history.
* **Project Controls:** When you add a subcontract, the project budget updates instantly to reflect that commitment. If a change order comes in for weekend overtime, the system records both the extra cost and the schedule delay right away. Budgets, commitments and schedules stay tied together, so you always see the financial and time impact in one view.
* **Bidding:** You can prequalify subs with a detailed form that covers safety records, licenses and finances. Each sub’s history stays in the system, so when the next highway job comes up, you can see how they performed on the last one before inviting them again.
* **Construction Documents:** Work off drawings you can actually review: Compare revisions side-by-side, overlay sheets and add markups. You can prevent review stalls by routing RFIs, submittals and change orders through defined approval paths with notifications.
* **Enterprise Content Management:** All company documents and correspondence are stored in one hub and tied to the right job. If a DOT inspector emails an updated spec, it’s logged with the project file, not lost in someone’s inbox.
* **Inventory and Equipment Management:** CMiC tracks every machine’s hours, costs and maintenance schedule. If a grader racks up extra hours on a highway resurfacing project, you automatically see the cost charged to that job and the maintenance record update. Track consumables like rebar or asphalt mix, and the job cost and general ledger update as soon as you log the usage.
* **Human Resource Management:** Payroll runs inside the system and feeds directly into job costing. Labor hours hit the project’s cost report as soon as payroll is processed. Certifications and licenses stay with the employee record, so you’ll know if an operator’s CDL is about to expire before assigning them to a job.
* **Process Automation:** You can set up approval paths for documents, purchase orders, invoices and change orders. The system sends automatic alerts whenever someone needs to take action, keeping work from piling up.
* **Reporting & Dashboards:** Run ad hoc or scheduled reports on live data, drill from a KPI straight into the original invoice or time entry, and cut out the need to export data into spreadsheets altogether.

## Approach to Common Construction Challenges

* **Disconnected Systems:** [Hand Construction](https://cmicglobal.com/resources/case-studies/hand-construction), a general contracting firm, implemented CMiC to bring accounting, payroll and project documents into one system. Invoices and RFPs were no longer scattered across Excel and ComputerEase, and audits finished in half the time.
* **Slow RFIs and Bids:** [Wasatch Taylormade](https://cmicglobal.com/resources/case-studies/wasatch-taylormade) equipped field crews with CMiC tablets to enter RFIs and send them directly to architects, allowing them to process RFIs 50% faster. Wasatch also accelerated subcontractor selection with CMiC Prequalification & Procurement, cutting bid turnaround by 20-30%.
* **Manual Billing and Payments:** [Hunter Roberts](https://cmicglobal.com/resources/case-studies/hunter-roberts) used CMiC Job Billing to connect subcontractor invoices directly to job billing and generate owner-specific billing documents, which eliminated duplicate entry and shortened billing cycles.
* **Poor Field Reporting:** [Layton](https://cdn.selecthub.com/product%5Fcase%5Fstudies/662/study.pdf?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAJBPSG65OJTMJV3TQ%2F20251007%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4%5Frequest&X-Amz-Date=20251007T042404Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Signature=a3107cd1603d15aa7f727ab408da144a5d2913cd3d65c414eaf88ab8b6b20328) superintendents used CMiC Mobile to log daily journals and project notes while still on-site. The change meant half of all records were created in the field instead of being re-entered later, giving the office real-time visibility into project activity.

## Testimonials

Data is critical for any company so—given that CMiC is the ERP solution for everything we do—it’s essential for us to understand the data in the system. CMiC also helped us turn around and employ the best practices enabled by the system.

\- Jeanne Boughner

Project Manager at DPR Construction

As we reviewed different products, we realized that CMiC Cloud was the only true SaaS solution for a company our size. We are very excited to know both our Construction and Service operations will soon be fully integrated on a real-time basis.

\- Michelle Eastman

CFO at North Mechanical Contracting & Service

CMiC has provided executional efficiencies that have helped improve project and team performance. This has enabled us to focus more on optimizing processes. To say that this has had a very positive impact to our business would be an understatement.

\- Joe Sterf

Controller at PJ Dick

Before Mobile, we had to go back to the trailer to find the answer to an RFI, or even to begin asking an RFI related question. Now, superintendents out in the field can discuss an issue right then and there by pulling it up right on their mobile device. It’s a huge time saver and the easiest way to access information.

\- Jeff Metcalf

Dir. Information Systems at Layton Construction

Having all the information we need integrated within CMiC’s single source of truth database, such as HR, payroll, resource planning, cost management, has provided our staff with the visibility they need to make better and quicker decisions. It’s a one-stop shop.

\- BJ VanOrman

ERP Strategic Director at JE Dunn Construction

With CMiC, our field team enters the RFI and sends it directly to whomever needs to answer it. In the past, the information would be loaded onto a network drive, which would require returning to a computer in the office later to download and view the files. I suspect that we are saving $45,000 to $50,000 per year as well as having a field engineer in the office. CMiC did more than shape our processes—it shaped our operations overall.

\- Jake Anderson

Vice President at Wasatch Taylormade

CMiC has great value and is customized to the industry. It’s a single source of truth for key things – from your database to your employees to job costs etc... if you were to look at a hub and spoke kind of thing, CMIC would be the hub.

\- Steve Brooks

ERP Product Manager at DPR Construction

Coming from multiple different systems, bringing everything together under one umbrella has been a new experience. There were some bumps in the road on our end getting used to it, but it’s been a great experience so far.

\- Adam Hubble

Chief Financial Officer at Hand Construction, LLC

As we continue to grow, the demand for data increases, along with the need for the right information to make better decisions and such. Having a system that facilitates this is quite significant for us. Ultimately, it all boils down to decision making and the speed at which we can accomplish it.

\- Ayodele Ayrod Rodipe

VP of Finance at AG&P Americas

We are operating now as we always should have been—with the insights coming from the field matching exactly what our costs on a project are.

\- Chris Hardin

"description": "CMiC is a construction management platform built to connect the front office, the jobsite and the back office in a single system. Designed for general contractors, subcontractors, and civil and highway firms, it combines project controls, financial management, procurement and field collaboration in one database.CMiC also plays well with other tools. Open APIs and integrations connect it to BIM platforms, scheduling software and third-party applications, helping firms reduce manual entry and keep data consistent. Many users say the system can be tailored to fit unique business processes, and they find it strong at managing large volumes of project and financial data.At the same time, CMiC comes with challenges. Users frequently mention that the interface feels complicated and not particularly user-friendly. Training and onboarding are often cited as weak spots, with firms noting that the system takes time to learn. To learn more about CMiC, visit their company profile. Our Research Approach for CMiCI watched YouTube tutorials to see the software in action and get a feel for the interface and read case studies to learn how different contractors are actually using it on projects. I also tapped into our own software selection platform to see where CMiC stands out and where it falls short compared to competitors. And I reviewed the vendor’s website and product resources to confirm details.",

"reviewBody": "What I found most impressive about CMiC is that it pulls three of the construction industry’s most painful processes — accounting, project management and procurement — into one place. It eliminates the hand-offs and double-entry that usually happen when these functions live in separate systems. For contractors, that single-database design means fewer surprises, faster reporting and a lot less chasing down data.Accounting is where CMiC shows its muscle. When paired with CMiC’s dashboards — which scored a perfect 100 in our analysis, beating out rivals like eCMS and Viewpoint Spectrum — managers can drill from a KPI straight into the source document without ever exporting to Excel.Procurement rounds out the picture. That tells you what kind of product CMiC is: powerful, but unforgiving if you don’t invest in training and change management.Bottom line: CMiC isn’t a lightweight point solution. It’s a construction-first platform strong enough to run your accounting, project management and procurement in one system. For larger contractors and civil firms, the payoff is worth the grind. For smaller or less complex operations, the cost and learning curve may outweigh the benefits."
