What we like about Google Classroom and Canvas:

What we dislike about Google Classroom and Canvas: 

* Not a full-service LMS — lacks advanced reporting and administrative features
* Free version has restricted functionality; more capable features require a paid plan
* Performance issues and glitches reported by users

* Technical issues including system crashes, data loss and bugs reported by users
* Grading statistics are limited, pushing some instructors to rely on external tools
* Rigid due date policies can be challenging when students need to submit work late

### Our Review 

**Bottom line:** Google Classroom is the better fit if you're already working inside Google's ecosystem and need a lightweight, affordable tool for assignments, grading and basic course delivery. Canvas is the stronger choice if you need a full LMS with structured outcomes, customizable course design and a broader integration footprint.

Google Classroom starts at $4.80 per student per year. Canvas offers a free plan for individual teachers, and paid institutional plans are available but not publicly priced — you'll need to contact sales for a quote.

If your workflow lives in Google Workspace, Classroom fits in naturally. It connects directly with Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar and Jamboard, so there's very little setup friction. Canvas also integrates with Google Workspace, but it goes further — it supports Microsoft 365, Turnitin, Zoom, Adobe and hundreds of other tools through the Edu App Center.

Canvas pulls ahead when you need structured learning. Mastery paths let you tie outcomes to assignments and route learners to different content based on how they perform. SpeedGrader brings all grading into one hub with inline comments and multimedia feedback. Google Classroom handles grading too, but its tools are simpler and it doesn't have the same depth for outcome tracking or learning analytics.

Both platforms have a free entry point, but they're built for different scales. Classroom works well for smaller groups that don't need complex reporting or admin controls. If you're managing large cohorts, need detailed analytics or want to track learner progress at a granular level, Canvas gives you more to work with — once you get past its steeper setup for advanced features.
