Based on an aggregate of BambooHR reviews taken from the sources above, the following pros & cons have been curated by a SelectHub Market Analyst.

#### Pros

* **Ease to Use:** BambooHR has an intuitive and lean design, to the delight of most reviewers who cited their experience with the platform.
* **Meets Business Needs:** Most users discussing functionality said they were satisfied with the platform’s wide-ranging HR features, specifically time tracking and employee and document management.

#### Cons

* I didn’t find any significant drawbacks based on my analysis of over 100 user reviews from the past 18 months.

#### Researcher's Summary:

BambooHR offers essential employee management with onboarding, document management and performance tracking. And for anything it doesn’t have built-in, there’s a good workaround or add-on.

True to its reputation, I found the platform easily navigable and pretty self-explanatory during my trial run. I could request time off, track accruals, create job descriptions and start onboarding/offboarding tasks intuitively — no need to look up product documentation or tutorials.

Readymade reports make life easier, and flexible filtering options are available to view data by department, location and pay range. Beyond that, a custom report builder enables more tailored insights.

While payroll management isn’t built-in, BambooHR offers a structured tiered approval system that enables payroll admins to conduct quick reviews before final approvals. For global teams, payroll visibility in local currency is a plus, although core payroll processing is designed around U.S. regulations which means it might not be directly transferrable to other countries.

On that note, some user reviews voiced concerns about the platform being unsuitable for non-U.S. companies, but BambooHR’s customer testimonials tell a different story — I found many non-U.S.-based success stories. Here’s just one:

BambooHR helped [Civtec](https://www.bamboohr.com/customers/civtec), based on Hamilton, New Zealand, manage its growing workforce by centralizing the entire employee lifecycle — from hiring to offboarding — into a single platform.

The convenience of the mobile app’s document access and self-service leave logging allowed their payroll department to shift focus from routine tasks to more pressing issues. Transitioning from paper to digital time-off records addressed legal concerns and improved recordkeeping. Plus, company-wide announcements ensured consistent messaging across four branches and 300+ employees.

For another one of my use cases, I checked out benefits: the benefits administration module integrates with HRIS and payroll to assign health insurance benefits to employees. I ran into no issues testing it.

As an administrator, I could enroll employees for benefits or waive them as required. While employees can enroll themselves, side-by-side comparisons between benefit options aren't available yet — an addition that I hope comes soon, since it would further enhance decision-making.

Time tracking is simple yet effective. I could create new requests and clock in and out from the home page, no extra clicking required. Automatic overtime calculations sync directly with payroll, but the system doesn’t issue overtime alerts. Biometric sensing isn’t available, but the platform ensures compliance and accurate payroll processing.

BambooHR excels in core HR functionalities, which makes it a great option for SMBs. However, expanding its payroll and benefits coverage out of the box could make it an even more attractive all-in-one solution.

* **Applicant Tracking System:** Leave no stone unturned in hiring the best talent — post jobs to popular job-sharing sites and social media. Stay on top of hiring updates with real-time alerts as candidates move through the application process. Respond promptly to candidates’ queries with in-app messaging.
* **Integrated Payroll (Add-On):** BambooHR supports payroll in all 50 U.S. states and includes full-service tax filing. You can automate overtime calculations to minimize payroll errors. If needed, BambooHR can integrate with third-party applications for compliance.
* **Performance Management:** Measure employee satisfaction and engagement by inviting them to fill out feedback forms and surveys. An AI assistant, **Ask BambooHR**, answers employee queries and summarizes survey scores.
* **Benefits Administration:** Sync with Maxwell Health, a third-party benefits administration outsourcer, or set up a variable rate health plan for your employees. Admins can choose and enter the information to display to users about each of the benefits.
* **Offboarding:** Ensure exiting employees complete the required formalities before leaving with a ready-to-go offboarding task list. Capture the information by adding custom fields to the employee profile.
* **Time and Attendance Management:** Empower your employees to check PTO with the in-app calculator. Improve team productivity and collaboration by avoiding scheduling conflicts. Use calendar views to track employee availability and plan meetings, shifts and project timelines accordingly.

Set custom permissions to keep confidential information safe and then share reports with as many people as you want. The AI bot, **Ask BambooHR**, helps in industry benchmarking with AI-driven insights.

## See It In Action: Key HR Modules

I was delighted by the homepage which came with a cornucopia of widgets: for my time logs, clock-in options, a calendar of events, time-off balances and requests, team members and their vacation time, out-of-office statuses and locations, and onboarding and training information.

  
A handy side pane allowed me to switch between **People, Hiring, Reports, Files, Payroll** and **Benefits**.

  
To get an under-the-hood view of how the system works in key areas, I explored several core HR modules, including employee management, ATS, and payroll and benefits management.

  
**Employee Management**

  
My use cases included adding new employees and onboarding and offboarding workflows. I could add an employee’s personal details, address, job, contact information and compensation all by clicking on **+New Employee**. I liked that BambooHR has a Power **Edits** feature — I could modify multiple fields for multiple employees at the same time.

  
I had the choice to permit employee access to BambooHR, or to limit it.

From the employee login, I could change my information, send a request to approve the changes and track the request. Since I was working with the vendor’s sample data, the underlying information was not editable, but the workflow functioned as expected.

  
**Applicant Tracking System**

  
I could create job descriptions and select the questions to ask in the job post. In addition to a resume and cover letter, I could ask for the candidate’s LinkedIn URL, expected salary, Twitter handle and higher education details.

However, I couldn’t try applying as a prospective candidate, as the trial version doesn’t integrate with job boards.

  
After receiving applications, I could set the candidate’s status and send emails to set up phone screenings, interviews, reference requests, hiring pauses or application rejections. I could also change candidate statuses and even add custom ones if needed.

While the platform lacks built-in employee referral workflows, it integrates with third-party providers to offer this functionality. Additionally, a career portal is available, customized as your organization’s domain plus the BambooHR careers URL.

  
Templates for offer letters and offer emails are available within BambooHR, and they’re customizable too.

Once I received the offer letter, I could add my digital signature to it within the email without using any integration.

  
And after a new hire accepts an offer, BambooHR sends them a hiring package, provided you opted for it earlier. The platform has readymade task lists for onboarding, including the W-4 and I-9 forms.

Once the administrator enables time tracking, employees can clock in and out, submit time off requests, and view the accruals and balance time. Administrators can approve or reject the time-off requests and pull the data into iCal — one of the standout features of BambooHR according to many user reviews I read.

  
As an administrator, I could accomplish all the above tasks, except the iCal creation, which isn’t part of the trial.

  
The time off report is available in tabular format as an Excel sheet or a PDF file.

As an administrator, I could not only add and remove employee benefits but also create benefit plans and choose the beneficiary type (employee, employee + spouse, or employee + family). The result: the **SelectHub Platinum** plan (what else?).

  
As a Benefits administrator, I could set up plan years and link them to benefits.

Unfortunately, because the trial version doesn't have payroll features, I couldn't test the deduction workflow by running a payroll cycle.

BambooHR offers readymade reports for benefits summary, employee information, payroll, performance and time tracking. Some metrics, such as headcount and turnover, are conveniently available on the home page. An eNPS report displays what people like and dislike and includes employee suggestions.

  
Employee names had hyperlinks to individual details; I could also search for specific employees using the global search option. However, I felt there was room for improvement, as searching for EmmaJones yielded no results — only Emma Jones did.

  
For time tracking, I found the time-off schedule calendar extremely handy for seeing who’s out and when at a glance. I took advantage of the available filters to create an asset report for people employed before March 3, 2024\. Reports are exportable and printable.

So two guys meet over a ping-pong table at work. They click but go their separate ways. Eight years later, they reconnect to create the best HR software company in the world.

That's it, in a nutshell. But there really is more to the story. Our founders, Ben Peterson and Ryan Sanders have impressive backgrounds and both had a lot of different opportunities.  

But they chose to create their own company and build great HR software because that's where they knew they could make a difference. Their secret ambition? Create an amazing place to work, where amazing work takes place.

I could request time off, track accruals, create job descriptions and start onboarding/offboarding tasks intuitively — no need to look up product documentation or tutorials.Readymade reports make life easier, and flexible filtering options are available to view data by department, location and pay range. Beyond that, a custom report builder enables more tailored insights.While payroll management isn’t built-in, BambooHR offers a structured tiered approval system that enables payroll admins to conduct quick reviews before final approvals. I ran into no issues testing it.As an administrator, I could enroll employees for benefits or waive them as required. While employees can enroll themselves, side-by-side comparisons between benefit options aren't available yet — an addition that I hope comes soon, since it would further enhance decision-making.Time tracking is simple yet effective. I could create new requests and clock in and out from the home page, no extra clicking required. Automatic overtime calculations sync directly with payroll, but the system doesn’t issue overtime alerts. Biometric sensing isn’t available, but the platform ensures compliance and accurate payroll processing.BambooHR excels in core HR functionalities, which makes it a great option for SMBs.
