Both systems offer strong but not comprehensive benefits management. You’ll get plan setup, employee self-service, retirement plans, and life event processing. However, unsupported features include benefits broker assistance, plan recommendations, and workers’ comp benefits.

On the compensation front, both Workday and SuccessFactors support compensation plans, approvals, salary budgets, incentives, bonuses, and benefits, with real-time budget tracking and salary grades. The platform has a broad set of native capabilities and proven workforce planning strengths that make it a compelling option if you’re seeking a unified HR and finance solution.

The trade-off is less flexibility: Workday’s process-centric design ties every change to predefined workflows. This structure works well for large enterprises with strict compliance needs, but it may slow you down if your HR team makes frequent bulk updates.

Workday may not be the best fit if your workforce spans multiple regions with highly specific compliance needs. Payroll is flexible but the platform natively supports only a limited number of countries, and its learning tools aren’t as advanced as SuccessFactors. If you need deeper localization or highly tailored document workflows, SuccessFactors might be a closer match.

Your article is biased in the sense that it is inclined for workday citing advantages which might not even be completely true, and missing to cite any advantages for Sap SuccessFactors, and it does have. You even include a workday screen 🙂  
– For accounting, HR and accounting are not an island, so even with workday they will have to integrate with the rest of the ecosystem, in which by the way SAP is way much stronger. SAP SuccessFactors in this sense is also much stronger in building the intelligent enterprise with HR at its core, providing one data model, one experience and process end-to-end (with seamless and native integrations) with integrates analytics for the whole enterprise.  
– Regarding your point of workday being more robust and scalable because it is not an acquisition and build their own apps, I recommend you go and learn how many acquisitions they have made in the past two years (nobody owns innovation 100% and it is hard, even for workday ;-), to keep up with the market).  
– SAP SuccessFactors is also way more advanced regarding experience management, in which workday is trying to catch up with a recent acquisition.  
– Sap SuccessFactors also has a much stronger and larger ecosystem for scalability and extensibility. how many partners/ certified consultants or extended apps to meet specific needs does workday offer?  
– In the table you rate equal both on compliance/ payroll. are you kidding? In how many countries is workday localized and offers payroll or is your article only for US companies with no presence out of US?  
And I could go on… I believe that as you say at the beginning, both offer really strong capabilities, and both have advantages (and disadvantages), we have to put them on top of the table and depending on where the client stands, the needs and roadmap, one or the other will be more suited. What is not very correct is to say that you are not biased and fail to offer a non-biased approach. There is no problem with having a preference, but you can’t say that you are not biased.  
By the way, I see now that the article is revamped to 2021…i guess you just change title? Perhaps you should also update your research and info. all the best

To answer your question, it’s hard to confidently predict what the future will hold that far out. There are so many factors in play — economic recessions, acquisitions, etc. — and the technology industry is always changing. A perfect example of that is the rise of AI.  
We believe Workday will be more robust going forward and will capture more of the global market. This is mainly due to the fact that they’re building and launching new modules year after year, which all tightly integrate together. SuccessFactors, on the other hand, was acquired by SAP. As such, it requires more integration and that could lead to it having a harder time advancing as a product.  
However, as I said, that’s only a prediction based on what we’re seeing today. It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out.

It’s misleading to say Workday has Accounting but SF doesn’t. SF is part of the larger SAP family, which is the global market-leader for Accounting and Finance. So, it makes me wonder about the rest of the article’s accuracy!

Hi Khair, thank you for writing to us. We’ve amended the article so that it now mentions SAP’s accounting functionality. However, in order for a SuccessFactors customer to obtain accounting functionality from SAP, they would still need to go through the integration process. Because of this, we stand by our analyst team’s findings that SuccessFactors does not (alone) support accounting functionality.
