It's not built for companies that want to plug something in and walk away. But if you're prepared to invest some time upfront — and you're tired of patching together payroll, time tracking and HR data from five different systems — it can bring real order to the chaos of your everyday.

Take [Rowleys Wholesale](https://www.ukg.com/customer-stories/rowleys-wholesale), for example. After rolling out UKG Ready, they boosted new hire retention by 15%, hit 97% mobile app adoption and saved $30K in consulting fees.

My research into UKG Ready showed me the platform is more thorough than flashy. Reporting is one of its strongest points, with over 150 built-in reports from ACA audits to payroll summaries and leave tracking.

The document management tools are equally strong (scoring 100 in our assessment), letting you configure data retention settings in accordance with GDPR — a feature not typically found in alternatives like Rippling or TriNet. On a higher level, the vendor offers robust customization, with 90% of reviewers who discussed it praising what’s available.

Payroll features are well-rounded — you get multiple pay cycles, off-cycle runs, direct deposits and even paper check printing — plus the ability to create paychecks from a mobile device. Expenses flow directly into payroll, with mobile photo uploads for receipts making it cleaner and quicker. Tax handling (which earns a score of 83) covers all major federal forms and filings, though it does fall short on proactive alerts for upcoming tax payments.

UKG Ready (77) also performs better than TriNet (62) and Namely (69) for mobile capabilities, handling more on-the-go needs like benefits enrollment, geofencing, direct deposits, wage access via UKG Wallet and timesheet approvals.

That said, the platform doesn’t flag upcoming tax deadlines or alert you when employees are nearing overtime, a gap I imagine is frustrating for busy teams juggling multiple priorities. I'd bet those reminders are high on the wishlist for a lot of admins.

From what I’ve seen, the tradeoff with UKG Ready is between flexibility and simplicity. The admin side does have a learning curve, especially when configuring workflows or permissions. But you’re getting a scalable system that supports nuanced policies and compliance demands. For teams managing hourly labor, multiple sites and frequent schedule changes, that tradeoff is likely worth it.

In short, if your team needs structure more than quick setup, and you value control over simplicity, UKG Ready is a strong contender. It’s especially well-suited to growing teams who’ve outgrown generic tools and need something more capable without committing to an enterprise-sized platform.

QuickBooks Payroll ranks high on our Express App for mobile capabilities (94), dashboard and reporting (92), and time and attendance management (91). It’s also currently on our payroll leaderboard as number eight out of ten.

I found a brief demo on QuickBooks' YouTube channel, which provided a great overview of its core functions.

One feature I appreciate is the ability to bookmark your most-used modules in the left-hand menu at the top. This is a real time-saver. Additionally, tasks are displayed at the top of the dashboard, which helps with transparency.

After selecting the payroll option on the left, the main menu options are: Overview, Employees, Contractors, Workers' Comp, Benefits, HR Advisor and Compliance.

I would have liked to see a few additional tabs, such as Reports, Pay History and General Setup.

Under the Overview tab, there are setup tasks like tax forms and completing pay setup.

While these resources are easy to access, I felt it might be easy to overlook them compared to having all setup info in a dedicated tab on the dashboard.

I found it very intuitive that after completing payroll for the first time, the payroll page shows shortcuts to common tasks like editing payroll and adding new employees.

The Overview tab also displays how many days are left until payday and lists to-dos.

The Employees tab is clear and concise, showing the name, pay rate, pay method and status of each employee.

Adding employees is straightforward with a dedicated button. Additionally, you can quickly look up employee information with a search bar.

Overall, QuickBooks Payroll felt mostly user-friendly, with helpful resources, though it could benefit from a few additional features for a more streamlined setup.

Looking to send a bonus? Use the **Run Payroll** option and navigate through the dropdown menu.

Compliance is always a priority in HR and payroll, and its dedicated tab shows the latest compliance information and updates.

I also tried the free trial, and while the layout initially felt a bit cluttered and intimidating, when I jumped over to the individual modules, I found those pages manageable.

The homepage displays vendors, customers and employees. Under the Employees section, I clicked on **Pay Center**. There, I found three tabs: **Pay Employees, Pay Liabilities** and **File Forms**.

Under **Pay Employees**, I could view the process by date, status, schedule, pay period and check date.

Although the homepage felt overwhelming at first, this section was much more straightforward. I appreciated how detailed it was, showing a list of recent payrolls with dates, gross pay, net pay and check count.

At the bottom of the page, there are quick guides, such as payroll tips and **Before You Hire**. For time-saving, I also like the **Other Activities** option next to the quick guides.

This feature provides shortcuts to add employees, void checks, print checks and create terminations. To the right of that, you’ll find **Reports**.

If you’re feeling lost, scrolling to the bottom of the page gives you these quick links and helpful options.

That said, user sentiment splits depending on where you look. G2 reviews are glowing. Reddit? Not so much. Several users reported botched pay runs, buggy updates and lackluster support, particularly for international payroll and Canadian teams.

ADP Workforce Now offers stronger payroll reliability in these scenarios, with AI-powered anomaly detection that catches errors before they hit paychecks, a safeguard Rippling's automation doesn't consistently match. So while Rippling claims to handle any worker type, the experience may vary in practice.

When it comes to advanced needs, Rippling struggles to compete with SAP SuccessFactors, which delivers deeper workforce insights and more mature talent management with regulatory compliance and global labor law support. However, Rippling offers time tracking and benefits enrollment that are comparable to mid-market competitor Paylocity, with the bonus of broader IT provisioning.

Cost-wise, it’s modular — compensation, analytics and scheduling come as extras, though most buyers say the pricing holds up well against similar tools.

**Bottom line:** For HR teams at mid-sized to large companies, Rippling can be a serious time-saver, especially if you're juggling multiple departments or international workers. However, smaller teams will get more out of it in terms of employee engagement with fewer moving parts to trip over.

TriNet HR Plus is a practical solution for SMBs looking for a system to handle payroll, onboarding, time tracking, PTO, benefits administration and compliance. The platform is especially appealing for small HR teams or solo administrators who want to simplify workflows without ceding control to a PEO.

Implementation is relatively straightforward, though not fully self-service, which can give small teams pause. In contrast, Rippling and Paycom deploy quicker and offer more robust customization.

Both these platforms also offer geofencing for accurate payroll, something TriNet HR Plus doesn’t have. Rippling also provides more robust analytics, with customizable dashboards and predictive capabilities for planning.

Speaking of payroll, TriNet claims payroll processing is a three-click task. I couldn’t verify it but I did find a real-world example of TriNet’s ease of use and speed. The CEO of Gemelli Biotech said that running bi-weekly payroll only takes him 15 minutes.

The vendor’s advisory services make it an attractive option for organizations with a lean or one-person HR team. But it’s worth doing your homework — users have flagged issues with support, including delayed responses and having to repeat the same problem to different reps. Though HR advisory is a separate service, it’s worth checking whether it actually lives up to expectations.

Beyond core workflows and advisory support, you should consider how much scalability you need. TriNet HR Plus has built-in connectors, third-party integration APIs and iPaaS support, but a few user reviews mentioned connection issues, especially with external benefits providers.

For broader third-party app support, consider Rippling — in our analysis, it offers 92% of critical integrations out of the box, more than TriNet’s 80%. Rippling also gets strong user reviews for making integrations easy.

On the reporting side, TriNet HR Plus offers 100% of core reporting features out of the box for small businesses — and 88% for midmarket and large enterprises — but cracks can start to show as you scale operations.The platform doesn’t support advanced conditional logic and offers limited filtering options in its reporting tools. For a larger headcount, Paylocity and Workday might be better suited, especially if you need AI-driven workforce planning.

My recommendation: If you're a small organization with limited HR headcount and your top priority is simplifying compliance and payroll without giving up control, I consider TriNet HR Plus a safe, steady choice.

But if you're planning to scale quickly, need mobile tools like geofencing, or want deeper analytics and forecasting, Rippling or Paycom may be a better long-term bet — just be ready for more configuration and higher complexity upfront.

Namely is comprehensive payroll and HR software for payroll processing, benefits administration, time and attendance tracking, and compliance management.

Namely has the number three spot on our list of best overall payroll software. Looking at our Express App, Namely earns a full 100 for dashboard and reporting, security and compliance, and platform capabilities. In contrast, mobile capabilities currently rank at 67.

There isn’t a free trial currently. Here’s an overview of the available product videos:

**Compliance**

I like that there's a search bar at the top for frequent compliance questions. You can search by keywords and filter by state. The video mentions the dashboard is customizable, too, which is always helpful. I didn't get to try out the customization directly, so I'm not sure how user-friendly the process is.

The layout for the product video looked a little cluttered at first, but as mentioned, you can tailor it. There are articles with popular compliance topics at the top, such as harassment prevention.

There's also access to webinars, whitepapers, a compliance calendar, HR assessments and compliance checklists.

I like that there's an HR assessment to analyze your company’s strengths along with potential risks.

**Recruiting Dashboard Product Video**

The latest activity is currently located at the bottom of the recruiting dashboard. I feel that placing this section at the top would make it more accessible and provide quicker insights into recent updates.

Notifications are positioned on the right side. While functional, I think placing them in a more central location could improve visibility and ease of access. The **Open Jobs** section is prominently displayed at the top, divided into categories like **New, Total, Hired** and **Active**.

These are useful, but it would be even more helpful to have additional filters, such as the number of applicants, closed positions, withdrawn applications, or roles under review, to provide a more comprehensive view of job statuses.

Job Menu and Overview There is a separate menu at the top that shows Jobs Opened, New Candidates, Candidates Advanced, Interviews Completed, and Offer Letters Sent. This menu is more condensed than the Open Jobs section and only displays data from the last seven days.

I feel that expanding this view to show more historical data and adding a bit more detail would improve its usefulness.

Additionally, combining some of these sections might save time and make it easier to navigate.

**Candidate Management**

Under the **Candidates** tab, **Incomplete Tasks** are located at the bottom right. I would recommend placing these tasks in a more prominent location, like the center of the screen, so they’re easier to spot and address. For each candidate, you can see their name, application status (e.g., phone screening, ruled out as non-qualified), and the date they applied.

Some candidates also have a star rating, though I’m not entirely sure if this is assigned by the reviewer or sourced from the job board they applied through.

There are a couple of features I liked. There are bulk actions for candidates, which is ideal during hiring season when you have multiple applications moving toward onboarding. Also, it seems pretty easy to sync jobs to online job boards.

**Time and Attendance**

The Time and Attendance Dashboard is designed to clearly display key information. At the top, it shows tardies, Approaching Overtime, and Missed Punches, which is a very effective layout, particularly for tracking missed time, as payroll relies on accurate timesheets.

In the center of the dashboard, time off requests are prominently displayed, making them easy to locate and manage. Below this section, you’ll find the employee's name, ID number, and whether they are clocked in or not, providing a quick overview of employee status.

The time clock functionality is simple and user-friendly. Employees can easily clock in or out by entering their name and company ID (presumably their number), and they can also log breaks using the options available: Clock In, Clock Out, Leave on Break, and Return from Break.

At the bottom of the screen, there is an option to Log onto Dashboard, which might be a feature intended for admins.

Once an employee clocks in, they are prompted to select a job code. Depending on the industry, this could be optional, but it provides value by tracking where the employee is working or the specific job they are assigned to.

Approving time punches is straightforward. Each day has a simple Approve checkbox, and there is an Add button in the bottom right corner that allows for manual adjustments to time entries if needed.

Paychex is an HR and payroll solution suited for businesses of all sizes. Known for its ease of use, the platform offers an intuitive interface and a mobile app that allows employees to access pay information, benefits, and PTO from anywhere.

One of Paychex’s key advantages is its all-in-one nature, with the "Pay-Now" feature enabling early access to wages. However, some users find the service expensive, especially when adding features like training, benefit administration or time tracking. This can make Paychex less cost-effective for smaller businesses.

Users also report occasional issues, such as slow loading times and glitches on the mobile app or when using cellular data. The interface can be tedious to navigate initially, particularly when accessing team-wide data, as it requires clicking through individual profiles. Additionally, some users are overwhelmed by the volume of notifications.

Taking a look at our Express App, Paychex earns a perfect 100 for expense management, security and compliance, platform capabilities, and dashboard and reporting. It's currently number one on our payroll software leaderboard.

When testing the interactive demo, I appreciated the clear layout of the dashboard. The "Needs Attention" section was especially useful, ensuring nothing important, like pending tasks or deadlines, was missed. The platform automatically saves changes, providing peace of mind in case of unexpected interruptions like WiFi outages or accidental clicks.

Although I prefer a different pay entry layout, the grid view is customizable with filters to adjust the view for easier access to specific employee data.

The main dashboard centralizes frequently accessed information, such as payroll status and submission deadlines. Tasks that need attention are highlighted, making it easy to stay on top of priorities. The dashboard also provides quick access to analytics, reports and essential tools.

Employees can edit personal details and access pay information, including pay stubs, time-off balances, and tax documents. However, these changes require admin approval, which I believe could be streamlined by allowing employees to approve certain updates themselves.

The design is simple and minimizes clutter, making navigation intuitive. In the "People" section, admins can add employees or contractors, and employees can clock in and out from the dashboard or mobile app. This integration makes the system feel efficient.

The dashboard also offers access to documents and performance evaluations, with all key information like pay rates, hours worked, and tasks displayed on one screen—eliminating the need to jump between pages.

Compensation details, including pay frequency, hourly rate and overtime, are clearly laid out, which helps with understanding pay breakdowns. Automated tax administration ensures employees can access tax information without needing to visit the office.

Overall, Paychex seems user-friendly and intuitive, but there is room for improvement, particularly in approving updates to employee and tax information. Reducing admin intervention in these areas could save time and lighten the workload.

Keep in mind that I only had access to the self-service demo, not a full trial, so your experience may differ if you have a representative guide you through more complex features.

Gusto is a user-friendly alternative to traditional payroll providers, earning high praise from customers. Our research of Gusto reviews shows 93% of users would recommend it. Another reason for its popularity is clear pricing on the vendor’s website — you know what you’re in for and how much you have to pay. Additionally, there are no binding contracts, and you can unsubscribe anytime.

Though Gusto offers multi-state payroll, it’s not limited to the U.S. The vendor supports contractor payments in over 120 countries. For example: Gusto enabled [Rise Marketing](https://gusto.com/customers/case-studies/rise-marketing) to achieve 125% client growth by scaling from local Philadelphia operations to 3+ states and 7+ countries.

Building on this foundation, Gusto recently expanded its international offerings through a [Remote](https://www.selecthub.com/p/global-employment-platforms/remote-com/) integration and now provides payroll for full-time employees in 10 countries, including Canada and the UK.

Despite its strengths, Gusto has limitations. For instance, Gusto offers payroll cancellation but up to two days before processing, whereas UKG Ready allows you to set your own cut-off time.

Beyond payroll, reporting shows clear gaps. Gusto (83) trails QuickBooks (100) when it comes to breadth of features. A key limitation is that Gusto doesn’t allow report bookmarking — you’ll need to reapply filters and columns each time. Gusto tries to offset this by integrating with QuickBooks for reporting, but existing QuickBooks Accounting users often find it simpler to use QuickBooks Payroll directly.

Service issues add to these functional gaps. Customer support is slow and inconsistent according to reviews. The vendor also charges you extra for year-end tax filings, which Reddit users say is not in the fine print when signing up.

As for integrations though, I was impressed with the wide range of options. Gusto offers several APIs for partners to form inbound and outbound connections, which can be great if you’re ready to pay for them. What I especially liked was the Gusto Embedded API, which lets you integrate payroll capabilities into your HR platforms.

**My recommendation:** Gusto makes sense if you're seeking a payroll platform, embedded or otherwise. There are no minimum employee counts — you can use Gusto even if you're a 1-2 person company via the Solo plan. RUN powered by ADP is a popular payroll and HR solution for a range of small businesses, including startups and newer companies needing robust payroll and HR tools (without extensive expertise).

Its efficient tools for managing employee records, benefits and compliance help these professionals minimize manual effort. Payroll specialists and accountants or bookkeepers also benefit from ADP RUN's automation and error detection.

The main menu and search bar (with shortcuts for common tasks under it) made it easy to find what I was looking for without an annoying amount of redirects or feeling like a game of Where’s Waldo. It’s simple and uncomplicated to view your paystub and when payday is.

For admins, the payroll feature seems straightforward. View your pay period, use “Calculate Paycheck” and check dates. Get an overview of payroll either for all employees or sort by things like last name. When you log in and get to the main page, there’s also a convenient reminder(s) section called “Top To-Dos.”

For famous document misplacers, there’s a document vault that keeps important info secure and accessible.

Onboard fully from your phone, including setting up direct deposit and tax withholdings without waiting for HR to show you how. For me, working remotely makes mobile access a must-have, and ADP RUN checks that box with mobile clocking in and out, viewing company policies, PTO, and pay info. Admins can also fully get payroll done on their phones.

If anything seems off, payroll error detection activates a pop-up box asking, “Does this look right?” and gives a brief explanation of potential issues; from there, admins select “Ignore issues” or “Go back and fix.”

Run a single report or select a popular report option. View payroll details, liabilities and summaries. Choose your date range and download the report from there (on the app or desktop).

Recent reviews cite long wait times over the phone for customer service. When I called the general line, I shared my details and got a specific number to dial. I would prefer direct transfers over calling separate numbers, although this might change once you have a designated contact.

Lastly, I've noticed that the cost is higher compared to competitors like Paychex or Workday. Purchasing add-on features “a la carte” affects the cost, which may be frustrating to some users who need more in-depth functionality on a smaller budget.

The RUN Powered by ADP® Mobile Payroll app is a free download for mobile devices. With the app, you can complete payroll processing, view reports like payroll liability and access or update employee 1099 info. Additional mobile app features vary depending on Apple or Android devices, such as a chat feature for Androids and pay rate changes on Apple devices.

Overall, RUN Powered by ADP is a comprehensive payroll solution for small businesses. Its intuitive design is great for users with little to no experience in most cases. It might be pricier than some alternatives, but most users find the added cost valid, considering its user-friendly interface, payroll automation and mobile app features.

To research Justworks, I joined a meeting where one of their experts gave me an in-depth demo. It provided a great overview of the platform and its features.

Taking a look at the demo, I found the platform straightforward. The main menu is organized into clear categories, such as Payments and HR, with relevant sub-options like the Payment Center under Payments and Benefits under HR.

Having a layout like this makes it easy to navigate without guessing where to find something, which is why I can see why users find it intuitive.

I particularly like how alerts are front and center—there’s no missing important updates. The search bar is another feature I appreciate because if I can’t find something right away, I can quickly search and locate it without hassle.

The holiday season is busy enough, so I found the reminder system helpful. Seeing alerts about upcoming banking holidays that affect payroll processing is a great touch.

For managers, the convenience of approving requests through email, the mobile app, or the platform itself is a standout feature. It gives the process flexibility.

The company calendar is a solid tool. Not only does it show holidays, but it also highlights new hire start dates, birthdays, and other milestones—great for keeping teams engaged and informed.

The **Upcoming Payments** section is a useful addition, giving quick visibility into PTO days, so I can easily see who’s off and plan accordingly.

Customizing employee access is straightforward. I can go into any employee’s profile, click settings and quickly adjust permissions with checkboxes. Onboarding is just as easy, whether for interns, contractors or full-time remote employees.

Entering basic information and selecting PTO options is simple, and the platform automatically adjusts the paperwork for different locations, which is a major plus for teams spread across the globe.

Overall, my experience with the platform has been positive. It’s intuitive and efficient. There’s also added peace of mind knowing customer support is basically in your back pocket, available around the clock and through seemingly every communication outlet.

Square Payroll is an online payment, time and attendance and POS system. Users like it best because it’s easy to use with an intuitive design that can be adopted quickly. They felt the pricing was fair and were especially pleased with its efficient processing of payment. Many users said they’d recommend it to other businesses similar to their own and were happy with its ability to create and file sales, quarterly and new hire reports. Lastly, they were pleased with its features, specifically its easy sign-in, reporting, time tracking and tax calculating. On the con side, customization options were minimal as it’s a reasonably straightforward system. Many companies that use the solution are restaurants that either want to give employees discounts on food or pay with money from their upcoming paycheck. They were displeased with its inability to allow this. Overall, this solution is excellent for small businesses, especially retail and food service. Larger companies should look elsewhere.

Audit trails, versioning and workflows come standard for transparency and accountability. Reporting is strong for most SMB needs, with over 100 canned reports plus a drag-and-drop builder for custom ones (though some users find the process of sharing reports a bit clunky). One of the platform’s biggest wins is flexibility. It’s easy to tweak workflows, build custom reports and set up data access rules without having to call support every time.
