**Bottom line:** Proofpoint Essentials and Barracuda Email Security Gateway both block spam, phishing, and malware well, but they fit different buyers. Pick Proofpoint Essentials if you're a small or mid-sized Microsoft 365 shop that wants per-user pricing and easy setup. Pick Barracuda if you're a larger organization that needs flexible deployment and a wider feature set.

Proofpoint Essentials shines when your stack is built around Microsoft 365\. Users say setup is quick and policies apply cleanly across the org. The Predictive URL Defense and machine learning BEC detection give you a strong safety net for phishing and impersonation attempts.

Barracuda fits you better if you want choice in how you run the product. You can deploy it on-premises, as a virtual appliance, in the cloud, or as a hybrid. The cloud portal centralizes management, and quarantine controls let users handle their own questionable mail.

Pricing tells two different stories. Proofpoint Essentials starts at $1.65 per user per month, so costs scale with headcount. Barracuda Email Security Gateway starts at $1,398.99 per month as a flat figure, which can favor you at higher user counts but feel steep for smaller teams.

One more thing to weigh. If you run Google Workspace or need internal email scanning, Proofpoint Essentials may not be the right fit.
