Nextech makes more sense if you work in a specialty like ophthalmology, dermatology, or plastic surgery and need workflows built around how those practices actually operate.

athenahealth is designed for small to medium-sized practices that need a full EHR without a long ramp-up. Users consistently say the interface is easy to navigate, and the way billing and scheduling connect in a single system saves time that would otherwise go to toggling between tools. It's also scalable, so it can grow with you as your practice adds providers or locations.

Nextech takes a different approach. It's built specifically for specialty practices, and that focus shows — the scheduling tools handle multi-provider and multi-resource setups, the charting templates adapt to specialty-specific workflows, and the RCM module is geared toward the more complex billing those practices deal with. The tradeoff is a steeper learning curve. Users note the interface can feel overwhelming at first, and getting the most out of the platform takes meaningful time and resources upfront.
